For me, hands down High Fidelity is the winner. I thought it was engaging and entertaining the whole way through.
Say Anything - when I got done with it, I was left with this feeling of Why do so many people like this? -

BOTH are engaging and entertaining for me. Ultimately, Say Anything (a movie I wasn't even expecting to like at first) is the one I prefer. The believable love story in the latter is lovelier than the one in High Fidelity.

Huh. I don't feel as though these are comparable at all. I guess I would choose High Fidelity simply because I can relate to it a bit more at this time in my life. Say Anything is a great movie too but I always felt that while it was a decent portrayal of teenage feelings and teenage love that the characters were portrayed a little bit more maturely than the average teenager is.

High Fidelity
is the better film in my opinion.
Say Anything
is a feel good teenage romantic comedy that never gets very deep.
High Fidelity
is about how stagnation affects relationships. Rob is a character with arrested development, who grows up, that is to say there is a character arc. Lloyd is a little too idealized, and doesn't really undergo as much of a character transformation. The writing in
High Fidelity
is much better, also the comedy of Jack Black is sublime.
