Cast Away is one of the most moving and meaningful movies I've ever seen. I saw it in 2000, when I was 16, and every couple years when I revisit it at a new stage in life, I find different things to appreciate.
The Martin was utter Hollywood pap. There's no comparison. All the stuff back on earth was gag-inducing. Matt Damon's character kept cool the whole time, he barely even had any conflict, just one brilliant solution after another, he didn't even break a sweat. And there was literally nothing to his character.
Cast Away was clearly made from a place of love and passion and is meant as a metaphor for life and the struggles/hardships of the individual. The Martin was made to sell tickets.

Although I see the simliarities, I don't think it's fair to compare.
However, for me Cast Away is definitely better. I love the Martian, but the heart and soul, the acting and of course for me Tom Hanks makes Cast Away superior.

Cast Away is a hundred times better! The Martian is a farce of a movie. I never once felt bad for that cocky character Matt Damon played.

The Martian. Scary was the fact that Watley could ONLY be saved by NASA. No remote chance that a wanderer was going to sail by and find him. And there was no way he could manufacture a space shuttle to get himself back.

The Martian was so ridiculous from the scientific side I didn't even make it through the whole thing.

                        Martian was over the top.

Cast Away obviously. Tom Hanks’ performance was Oscar-worthy. The Martian was a big old turd

tommy "douche" hank NEVER had an oscar-worthy performance. He also has no sense of humour.

So it's The Martian for me, a great comedy.

Hanks was being a real asshole that night! This surprised me, because he's SUPPOSED to be a nice guy. Hmmm. Maybe not.

Forrest Gump won all the Oscars, Pulp Fiction was the loser. But what has become the cult classic? Pulp Fiction. Because tommy "douche" hanks. Life is like a box o chocalates… you never know what you gonna get… BULLSHIT! Look at the bottom of the box, it lists all the different chocolates in the box. He's dump AF.
Shaving Ryan's Privates was ok, but that movie with tommy "douche" hanks sucked, bar the first 20 minutes on that beach. Philadelphia is a movie for homosexuals, no real man has seen that, so I can't comment on it, but since it has tommy "douche" hanks in it, it HAS to suck.
