Is it dumb that I was assuming Ray Park was under that mask? I mean it seems like it would be him

I thought it was Luke Goss. I had to look it up here on IMDB to figure out who it was.

Very badass. I'd like to see him fight the prince from Hellboy 2.

Didn't he have to insert a key in his chest to wind up some gears so he could function? That's steampunk enough for me.

But there was no steam. Kind of a key ingredient for steampunk.

                      Yes, really.
Kroenen is a clockwork creature, not steampunk. Steam is actually a key ingredient for steampunk.

Again, no. That's a pretty restrictive way of defining it.
I saw worlds burning. I saw more; I saw the birth of a star.

Again, yes, because that IS the definition. There is no other definition. It's like taking the salt out of salt water and claiming it's still salt water. You're missing the key ingredient.
You can't have steampunk without steam.
And as I pointed out, Kroenen is clockwork, not steampunk. He runs on gears that are winded. You know, like a clock.
He doesn't run on steam. You know, like steam engines.

No it's not. Steampunk outfits or costumes do not need to have steam machinery going on. Steampunk is broader than just steam machinery.

He's not wearing steampunk clothing either.
Plus, the original point was that him winding himself up was steampunk. It's not. It's clockwork.

Certain aspects of the costume design, the big glossy eyepieces, the style of the various masks, the decorations on the vest and yes, the clockwork which
                                is
a common element in many steampunk works they all seem to be pretty in line with steampunk visuals.
Is he supposed to evoke a steampunk vibe? Maybe. Del Toro loves that kind of visual.
Can people see it as such? Certainly.

You make very interesting points. In terms of visuals, Kroenen is certainly steam punk inspired.
But in regards to him winding himself up, that's clock punk, not steam punk.

Most people just call that steampunk, which has become an umbrella term for many visual styles.
Don't know what you mean by "winding himself up".

And yeah, most people use that term, but they don't always use it right. People look at a Victorian house and call it gothic architecture.
What I mean is when he sticks the key into his chest and winds up his gears to fight or get off the operating table. That's clock punk because he's built and wound up like an elaborate clock. Del Toro is a big fan of that: Cronos, the final battle in Hellboy II, and of course, the running theme of the watch in Pan's Labyrinth.

It's legitimate to label it as steampunk though. Steampunk includes a lot of visual subgenres. It's like someone calling an Iguana a Reptile and someone else saying "wrong! It's an Iguanidae!"

                                          Yes, visually, Kroenen is steampunk.
But not mechanically, which was the original point. He runs on clock punk, not steampunk.
It's like saying a toad is a frog. Visually, they are similar. But they are not the same animal.
