I own
Paprika
Paranoia Agent
Noein
Ergo Proxy
But I haven't watched any of them yet.
I did enjoy Last Exile, Princess Monoke, and Haibane Renmei.
Some other good ones, kind of slow paced but well done, Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 09:24 PM)
Ihave seen Voices of a Distant Star before. I thought it was pretty good. I believe the same director did The Place Promised in Our Early Days. I have yet to see that one though.I think there is another one being made by that same director. Have either of you seen Shigurui: Death Frenzy? It is a Samurai anime. Very gory, and mature rated. I wasn't too thrilled with it. It really didn't have an ending like most animes.

Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5cm per Second are all by the same person. Not sure if there are others still.
I have not seen Shigurui.
Here are my brief views on a few series I've recently watched, copied from my Notes on Facebook.
Blue Drop:
Well, it wasn't quite what I expected based on the back of the case. Lot more slice-of-life drama as opposed to the sci-fi action implied. What the series did, it did well enough, but it's ending made it all feel like a prequel to an epic sci-fi war drama series that doesn't exist.
Can't say I felt my time was wasted watching it, but also can't see myself recommending this to anyone.
Saikano:
Shuji and Chise have just started dating when, during an air raid, he learns that his girlfriend is the ultimate weapon in the Japanese military's forces in the vast war being waged. It's all down hill from there.
It's about war and love and loss.
Well, that was a good series, but quite a downer. I don't think youcould make it more of a downer unless they had started killing kittens.
Tide Line Blue:
Loved it. A great mix of comedy, drama, and emotion in a post-apocalyptic waterworld. A rogue submarine commander setting out to start a world war as the UN tries to start over in this new world, with twin brothers Keel and Teen caught in the middle.
Serial Experiments Lain:
It was good, but didn't quite enjoy it as much as I feel I should have. I'm thinking I should re-watch the series when I'm in a mood that syncs up with it better. I had no idea what to expect going into it initially, so that may have hindered my immersion into it. Love the concepts it delves into though about what is real and what isn't and what the ultimate end result of the internet may be. -

I still need to see The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5cm per Second.
I really didn't enjoy Shigurui that much. The episodes were alright, but the begining was similar to Gungrave/Berserk. Then at the end it never told you how the characters arrived at that point. Then it didn't even tell you what happened from there. I really don't like endings like that lol.
A couple of years ago I saw a trailer for Saikano. Thought it looked interesting so I ended up buying it from animecornerstore.com. I sat down one day I was off of work, and proceeded to watch the entire thing. After it was all over I told myself never again! Man that thing was depressing lol. I think you are right the only way it could have been worse is if they killed kittensalthough by the ending I am pretty sure there are no kittens left lol.
I have Serial Experiments Lain, but have yet to watch it. I think I am going to start Requiem from the Darkness now
Have you seen Elfen Lied yet?

Elfen Lied is pretty good. Although it is very violent! The opening scene has a naked girl ripping people to pieces. So if that bothers you. You should avoid it. Really though it is a horror series. Has a pretty good story line. I enjoyed it. There are a few scenes in that series that will make you cringe though

"Pretty violent"? Elfen Lied is very violent, hehe. I actually only saw the first episode and said au revoir to the series. I now only remember the scene where the girl rips off the secretary's head and it is spinning around in the air. I dont mind violence in general, I survived 26 episodes of Gantz that is very graphic and contains not one and not two gory moments, and 100 Stories, that has just one twisted plot, so I dont know what went wrong for me with Elfen Lied that I could not watch it. I blame this spinning head.
I have seen The Place Promised in Our Early Days a few days ago, I was a bit disappointed at the ending to be fair, but the animation and the ambience were first class, and it was not as pesimistic as Voices of the Distant Star.
I have seen a first episode of Shiki which turned out to be about vampires (vampires are everywhere now!), but I hope it will get better than it was in the first episode. have you guys seen Vampire Knight? I wondered about people's opinion on it. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 18, 2010 10:55 AM)
haha! Yeah Elfen Lied is not for the faint of heart that is for sure. The story is pretty good though once you start getting into the series. Gantz was pretty decent. I started watching it the same time as a friend. He liked the begining (the comedy) I actually thought the last couple of episodes where Kei started to become more of a hero type character was the best part of the series. My friend didn't like the ending like I did.
So you liked Requiem from the Darkness then? The same friend I mentioned said he liked it, but thought they should have done 100 episodes to coincide with the 100 stories of the book the guy is writing.
I would still like to see The Place Promised in our Early Days. Voices of a Distant Star was good. I believe the director animated Voices completely by his/her self. I am not sure about TPPIOED's though
The Vampire "trend" has been stale for awhile now. (Damn you Twilight!) Oh well we still have Hellsing right? Maybe Alucard can stop the Twilight madness!

I liked Gantz. It had good characters, although once
Katou and the little dog died
, it was never the same. I think the last arch needed more than just one protagonist. I wanted to read the manga, but with 300+ chapters, nah, thanks.
I think Requiem for the Darkness is definitely not something I would like to see 100 episodes of ^_^ It is not a kind show I can say I e n j o y e d really, a few episodes proved quite disturbing, but it is an interesting oneas a whole. It has some flaws, like I never really cared for any of the characters, and the ending was kind of meh, I expected something more. I'd definitely say Ayakashi and its spioff Mononoke, which both belong to the same genre, history-spirits-horror type of, were excellent, and could do with more episodes.
Vampires are such a good topic for films/anime/books, I wonder why is it so hard to make something decent out of it. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 18, 2010 05:39 PM)
I thought Gantz was good too. Hey the Dog had two of the best scenes with the girl though! lol
I haven't seen Requiem yet, but I think I can safely say that just because the main character is writing a book about 100 storiesDoesn't mean you have to have 100 episodes. Actually to me most of those long animes get lost within themselves. It is harder for me to get into them. So I agree. Although I guess I need to see it first =P
Vampires are great! However, when they make them love sick teenagers is when they go wrong. Not that is necessarily a bad thing. But it seems that is the only movies they put out. By the way Daybreakers I thought was horrible. 30 Days of Night was decent though. Hellsing has the best Vampire of all time in it! Next to D that is.
How do you make the spoilers box around the text you want to hide?

It took me a while to figure it out, but here it is:
http://www.imdb.com/help/boards/markup
Has all the useful stuff to edit the posts, including spoiler signs etc.
I just though it was so sad when the doggie died, not fair, since it could not even properly defent itself (bite a statue? ^_^ haha).
The longest series I have watched was FMA Brotherhood, with 64 eposides, and then the first FMA with 51 (and the reason why I started was that I didnt not know how long it would be). I dont like very long shows, like Bleach. Takes too much time and at one point you can not even remember how it all started. With requiem for the Darkness the problem is more that it feels not confortable enough to watch it for a long time.
Daybreakers, ugh. I thought it was ridiculous, although the idea was there. The beginning was not bad, but then, a lot of films start well, and then they turn bad. Vampire Hunter D is one show that proves how good a vampire theme can get, although I suppose if you want to make money you will replace D with a pale James Dean wannabe in an expensive car.

Thanks for the help! I just want to make sure no one's experience is ruined because the newbie doesn't know how to properly warn people about spoilers. I have had things ruined before on boards of this site. Now I just try not to go into a board until I am done watching something

I really did think it was sad when the Dog died. I am a huge dog lover! I know you didn't finish it. There was a later episode of Elfen Lied that you would have not liked that involved a puppy. I had to turn away.
I started to watch Bleach. I thought that was a decent show. I agree that sometimes they get lost within themselves when they run too long. The only long anime that I enjoy is Inu Yasha. I for some reason developed a fascination with it when I first got into anime. It just ended at almost 200 episodes, and four movies. Although I have not seen the ending of it.
So Requiem From the Darkness is disturbing then? Is it the violence, or the over all atmosphere?
Yes I was very disappointed with Daybreakers. I didn't think it was going to be a masterpiece going in. It just turned bad in a hurry. My favorite part of the whole movie was Willem Dafoe. He is a great actor. Just a horrible movie Ethan Hawk is a pretty good actor as well. I also like Sam Neil. The movie just didn't go anywhere I thought. The should make a live action Vampire Hunter D flick. The first movie you could have him kill Edward from Twilight. He could kill him in like the first 5 seconds of the moviemaybe 2 seconds hahah!

Requiem for the Darkness was quite disturbing. Actually it gets lighter towards the end of the show, but two episodes from the middle literally made me feel sick. Also the atmosphere is very claustrophopic. And it did not help I was watching the show while having a high fever. Do not repeat my mistake
I think sometimes literal violence (like in Gantz, or Battle Royale) is easier to get over than incest, etc.
When I found out about Bleach it had already 120 episodes or so. I got DVDs from a friend with first few seasons, but then as I knew I will not get the other few dozens of them for myself, I did not even start. I dont like watching a show of which I know I will not not be able see the ending. Sometimes the characters grow on me, so id probably feel obliged to watch the whole thing.
I think the idea for the beginning of Daybreakers was not too bad, but it went horribly wrong. Like when they came up with the solution, I was like what the hell. Is that it? The whole explanation was just stupid. I thought it was a shame that with so many decent actors they just wasted an 1,5 hours of my life.
I think the problem with live action D film is the choice of the main actor. I can not see absolutely anyone who would be good in the role. But anyways, Edward Cullen would not be good enough to polish D's horse's hooves.

Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 20, 2010 05:45 PM)
I had watched the first episode not too long ago. I remember the show having a very murky creepy atmosphere. Yeah incest is pretty sick!
I know what you mean about long shows like Bleach. There is one kind of long one I am very interested in seeing. Have you heard of Monster? It is about a doctor that ignores what the hospital board tells him. They tell him not to save this young boy. He does it any ways. Which leads to them firing him. Turns out the boy is a sadistic killer. So the series focuses on the Doctor seeking the boy out to "fix" his mistake.I heard Viz did the dubbing, but canceled after 16 episodesI believe there is 74 total episodes
The whole solution for Daybreakers wasn't well thought out at all. Also the "jump" scares I didn't think were that impressive.I felt cheated too!
I am still racking my brains as to who could portray D.Can't find anyoneHave you heard about the Cowboy Bebop live action movie? They have Keanu Reeves playing SpikeI think I am going to be sick. I like Keanu, but He is too old for Spike. Spike is supposed to be around 28 or so. Not in his early 40's Plus I don't think Keanu has the acting chops to fulfill the role. Spike is just a cool guy.

Was Comboy Bebop also not supposed to have someone like Camron Diaz as Fay? They might have changed since the last time I was reading news about it, but it defintiely shows the director/producers have never seen the real thing. And they probably would not care anyways even if they did. I dont think Keanu is such a great actor, not that he is bad but he does not look right either. I think it is the general problem with live action films, I have not seen a single one that was decent (Blood the last vampire live action was probably the worst film of last year, or a runner up for the title in best case). First, there is the acting problem, then if you try to stuff 26 eposides on anime into a 90 minute film, there is bound to be shortcuts. I have seen the live action Deathnote and I thought that what they did to the script was a crime. Honestly, the writer should have gone to jail for butchering an otherwise smart show. But at least they did a decent job with casting BTW, Gantz in gonna be a live action as well, coming out next year! Actually, I am pretty excited about it.
With D it is even more difficult, because everywhere in the novels it says at least 100 times that D was so beautiful that even men were uneasy around him, but somehow that meakes a lot of people think that it means he was looking like a woman or something. And finding an actor that would be beautiful in everyones eyes is more lime mission impossible:)
Monster sounds really interesting! 74 episodes is still not that bad, and since the show is over there is not gonna be more, I could deal with that.
I usually do not watch the shows dubbed unleast I really really have too I dont know why, but the dub often really irritates me, I have not seen too many series/films where the dubbing would be even half as good as the original, Vampire Hunter D was an exception, maybe ebcause it was done first in English and the voice acting was just perfect -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 24, 2010 02:23 PM)
Cameron Diaz as Fay!??? Yuck! I mean I think she is a decent actress, but she is no Fay Valentine! Well instead of a movie I think they should keep an anime the way it was originally shown. In this case a 26 episode format! Plus one movie! They could film it as a mini series. Then they could keep the episodes intact! I mean they could even expand on them, and turn them from 20 minutes. To 40 minutes. Gantz live action sounds very interesting!
Yeah it would be hard to cast D for sure. Especially like you said. He is supposed to be extremely "beautiful".
Check out
www.animenewsnetwork.com/
For more details about Monster. I would really like to get into that series provided they release the whole thing on dvd.I also read that the translated the Monster manga scene for scene with the anime.
I prefer the dubs myself. However you are right sometimes the dubs are badBebop has one of the best dubs around. Baccano is fantastic! You need to check that show out as soon as you can! Take my word for it!
I just received Claymore in the mail today. I heard some people said it reminded them of Berserk. So I thought I would check it out.Let me know when you get Baccano! I think it is only $20 on amazon. That is where I bought it from.

Gantz might be an OK movie at least since the Japanese will do it. Their live actions dont suck as much as the American ones

I will check out Monster and Baccano! for sure once I finish Gungrave (Im more than halfway through!), I am also kind of interested in Eureka 7, Planetes and Mushishi, it used to have brilliant reviews, but I ended up only watch first to episodes, I might watch it again. Claymore is supposed to be good as well, I think I have in on DVD back at home. I actually have quite a few shows somewhere on my shelves, so I might use a part of remaining summer catching up:)
I think the problem with dubs is that very often they do not say the same thing as the original. I speak little Japanese, bur sometimes the difference I get is quite big. Like, in Japanese version they would use swear words while in the dub they would say "Oh my!":) And in most cases I actually find the original superior somehow, it matches the characters more. I remember watching GiTS SAC and I compared a few episodes with the dub one, i simply could not stand listening to the leads. They used a completely different manner of speaking, and that kind of changed my perception of the characters. Since they I stik to the original. It can add some new interesting thing to the interpretation of the character, but I really enjoy listening to Japanese, even though I dont get much, and reading subtitles.

So how are you liking Gungrave? Well I have yet to see Monster.I am going to wait until they have the whole series available. If I were you I would recommend checking out Baccano first. There is only 16 episodes. I saw the dub first. Then tried watching it in Japanese. I couldn't stand that one in subsThe dub actors do the accents so amazingly well. Wait until you hear Ladd Russo, or Vino :). I warn you though. There are a lot of funny moments, but there is some very violent images. Of course not like Gantz, or the beginning of Elfen Lied. Shows someone get their face ripped off while having it drug on the ground from a train :O! Also the beginning can be confusing because they introduce like 18 "main" characters in the first episode. Then they keep showing flash backs, and forwards over a 3 year period. After a couple of episodes you get used to the pacing though. Actually the twist are A LOT more rewarding when viewing them that way

I really like it. And I love to see how the characters age as the times passes by, even slight differences if faces are visible, they put a lot of attention in such details. It is not the case in all shows, you sometimes get an anime that lasts quite a while and the characters look the same, except for f.ex. longer hair. This is what I did not particularly like about FMA Brotherhood, the characters were a lot less detailed than in the manga, and the faces would not change at all although you see some character's hostory over 10 years or even more. Also it is nice to see such well developped and complex characters. It is hard to put it off really:)
I just rewatched a few Gantz episodes and Requiem for the Darkness, so a ripped off face does not sound so scary at all:) -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 26, 2010 06:49 PM)
I am very glad that you are enjoying Gungrave so much! The first time I saw it I remembered how amazed I was by it. The same things you are describing about the aging I found fascinating as well. Like you said most series don't put much thought into that aspect. Brandon Heat, is just an amazing character. My favorite part of the series is right after he becomes The Sweeper. He is just such a bad ass :). At the same time though you just feel for the guy. I mean everything that he is doing to "Never betray the family". I won't give away any details, but I will say this. To me the whole series has this Shakespeare vibe to it(I think I said this once before). Some of the best characters in anime. It truely deserves top 10 spot. For me I would say it belongs in my top 5. What episode are you on?
I am on episode 8 of Claymore. I am really getting into it. I wouldn't say it is as good as Berserk, but I see where some people would say there are similarities to it. I need to wait until I see the end though before I write a full review. Right now we are at a flash back that is lasting 4 episodes now. I will keep you posted on my continuing thoughts, and ultimately final review. I think after this I am going to watch The Big O again
Or then again I need to watch Requiem since we keep talking about it lol. Well there are a couple of "freaky" parts to Baccano. Especially when they are talking about The Rail Tracer. Wow just thinking about it makes me want to watch it again just to see all of the things that I "missed" the first go around. Baccano is definitely in my top 5 now by the way. Which I think would look something like this.
Berserk
Baccano
Cowboy Bebop + Movie
Trigun + movie (even though I have yet to see the movie)
Gungrave
I really want to check out Mushishi btw.
Have a nice Day
