My thought is that he missed them and very much wanted to see them again. I never got the feeling that he would consider suicide to do it though. Or he was just very weak at the time and was possibly actually contemplating it.
Mentally and emotionally, he was in a very bad place at the time, and no he wasn't really 'himself' so to speak. Notice he didn't act on any temptations he may have had.

I don't think he wanted to commit suicide. He just missed his them badly, and felt lost. In the end. He clearly lives, and returns to Meryl. Dropping his gun, and coat.
