Maybe you would enjoy "The Celebration", af film by Thomas Vinterberg.
It's about a grown man facing his childhood with child abuse.
Maybe not as bleak as Lilja 4-ever, but it still has that scandinavian something.

      Christiane F. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082176
Theres some brutal realism for you. Talk about some harsh and grim settings.
      Highly recommended
Requiem for a dream http://www.imdb.com/board/10180093/ Well this is shot in a more flashier style, but have to be one of the most depressing films i've seen. Jump on a downward spiral roller coaster to hell.
      maybe maria full of grace

Christiane F. was not worth watching. I can see it making an impact in 1981 but the only thing that stands out in this movie is the withdrawl scene.

i have to wholly disagree with this statementwith respect.
Christiane f is an amazing, shocking and memorable film that is extremely engaging. Great acting, rich subject matter and brutal, unforgiving settings and situations. I only saw it about a year ago and it affected me majorly.

I agree. I remember watching it about 20 years ago and recently rewatched it. It was a brutal movie. One that stuck in my mind for a long time (sort of like Lilya 4-Ever) - both made impacts on me.

Feel free to ignore the user 'MrAgmoore.' Anyone who would poo-poo 'Christiane F.' in a thread of recommended-bleak-movies needs to re-examine his position. No humping.
Here are two more, yet unmentioned:
              Holly (2006) http://www.imdb.com/board/10419815/
              Trade (2007) http://www.imdb.com/board/10399095/

I'd forgotten about Holly & Trade - both are great films imo. Definitely recommended for those who liked Lilya-4Ever.

One film this really reminded me of while watching was Kids. Very similar style and realism.
Also, I second Requiem for a Dream. A++ film.
I also second Boys Don't Cry.

One film that hasn't been mentioned is
                        Rosetta
. I liked Lilya, but Rosetta is a much more accomplished film imo. Has a similar plot (young girl trying to survive by herself - though does not tackle the same issues of Lilya) and a realistic style. The acting and directing are really great, the Dardenne brothers have a really unique style, that looks simple but takes great skill to pull off. I love it, thoroughly recommended.

                          Yes!
                          Rosetta
would have been my nomination. Similar themes, and, well, the Dardenne brothers pretty much 'own' their chosen genre at present.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.

check out 'the dreamlife of angels' if you can track it down. very realistic/depressing french film with stunning performances from both female leads. one of my all time favorites.

                                        Agreed. Great film.
Also check out Anjos do Sol (2006) http://www.imdb.com/board/10847154/. Both Lilja 4ever and that has very similar content.

Anything by Ken Loach is pretty grim.As are films by Catherine Breillat, but she more deals with adolescents and sexual perception and awareness.
Never happen, Cherry. You survive the Nam, you get to live forever, man.
