I saw this film, and you make some excellent points, especially about the
graphic violence.
It would have been a much better film with the violence toned down a bit.

This deluded fantasy film that was preaching to the converted, was still undoubtedly expertly directed by Gibson, one of the better famous stars turned director.
Gibson though, I feel overdid the crucifixion walk and dragged it out too long, and as a whole, I would prefer to watch Scorsese's
The Last Temptation Of Christ - '88.
There is also no backstory to Jesus. Who was this man that we were seeing brutally abused, degraded and tortured for an entire 2hrs?

"There is also no backstory to Jesus. Who was this man that we were seeing brutally abused, degraded and tortured for an entire 2hrs?"
That was EXACTLY the problem with this film. As brilliant as it was as a piece of filmmkaking it gave no background as to why this story was important. -

There were a few flashbacks, yet Gibson decided that who Jesus was and what he represented as a savior for many wasn't important. He was only making this for his own religious cabal.
