Finally watched the finale, worst series ending ever.

My daughter and I have come up with several different interpretations of the final moments of season 8.
Personally, I'm sticking to Dexter having had a psychotic breakdown after Rita is killed, and everything else you see are his fantasies from inside a mental facility! Takes care of the increasingly bizarre plots and season 8 being everyone's least-favourite. -

I can't believe so many people here actually liked the ending. The whole Deb thing was really forced, there were any number of ways they could have made that seem natural, but instead it felt like they basically just said "well, it's time for her to die, soooooooooooooo, now she's dead." And the whole thing with Dexter just cruising into that storm is bad enough, I don't agree with that direction for the character at all, but to then undo that with the final scene is just stupid. What's the point of building up that death wish, having him act on it, and then showing him alive and for no apparent reason content with his place in life at the end? It's just really sloppy writing. When you build towards something you shouldn't then negate it with zero explanation as the final scene in the show.

I don't know if it's the worst ending ever, but it's certainly the worst of the shows that I have actually watched. The sad thing is that most of the people on here were RELIEVED by that beep ending because so many supposed spoilers were floating around. Here are a few for example:
- Joey Quinn would become the new Dexter after Deb and his mexicano gf were killed. Dexter would go to Argentina and live with Hannah and Harrison. The final shot of the series would be Quinn looking into the camera and saying "tonight's the night".
- Dexter and the brain surgeon end up on a boat duking it out in the middle of the hurricane. Captain Matthews steps out of the shadows and shoots both Dexter and the big bad in the head, killing them both. A twist is revealed that Matthews knew who Dexter was all along, but had to end him once he got out of control. The last scene is Quinn and Batista's sister adopting Harrison, and Dexter appearing to Harrison like Harry did him.
