Mariel scored herself a best supp actress Oscar nom for her role in
Manhattan
. She is the light in the film, which has underlying ugly tones/themes despite it being a supposedly sophisticated comedy.
The other characters just aren't that likeable or endearing and if this was Allen's point, I don't think it worked and it was just a wish fulfillment fantasy of his, a 40 something dating a 17yr old.
I don't even get why Mariel's sweet Tracy character would even fall for such a creepy nebbish gorp and Allen sort of rehashed his Alvy Singer character from
Annie Hall
, in that Issac was educating her. It was the wrong type of education.
I wanted Sarandon to suffer big time in
Lipstick
. Its been a while since I saw and I can't recall if Margaux torments him before blowing him the f<>k away,

Interesting:
Filmmakers said they used a combination of makeup and forced perspective shots to allow Fuhrman to again portray Esther. Two female child actors also served as body doubles for Fuhrman.
