Most broken noses are just separation of the cartilage. I broke the actual bone, which is technically the skull. -

OK. Makes sense. It is tough to go back on the field. I just don't get it being career ending.
That said, my experience with a broken nose is limited. Not sure if it was just cartilage or bone like you said.
Nose breaks must be pretty common in rugby though, right?

Nose breaks are common, but not to that type of extreme like mine.
To me, a career ending injury will be either a knee or a back/neck injury. Something I will never recover from, so I won't be able to play as well as I am today.
The reason I think others were surprised, was because of the severity of the break. They saw a guy with the front face of his skull….broken. I didn't see it. I think the fact that I couldn't see how bad it looked, was the reason it didn't mentally effect me and scared me to continue playing.
We did lose 3 players on our team though. They saw the injury, never came back. -
