Did Lana really need to return for those comparisons to be made and what did that actually add to the story or Lee's character other than "Oh hey I guess you two are strong women who survived tough situations!"
You could compare Lee to any strong character from the show.
Ultimately Lana really didn't offer anything of value to the finale or Lee's character other than giving the viewers a chance to go "Ooh look it's Lana!!!"

Did you not laugh when she got pistol whipped?

Nope. I was hoping for her return to actually have some value.

              I agree with this.
Bringing back Lana served to give Lee some undue credit. The show wasn't about Lee being a good mother or a strong woman, but it ended up being something like that. We didn't spend enough time experiencing things through Lee's perspective, and that's one of the reasons fans are like 'Lee wasn't a hero.' Because she did some horrible stuff. Some good. Some real bad.
With Lana in the Asylum we sympathized with her, then as she got stronger, did questionable or worse things, we were still able to side with her as we saw what she had to endure and go through.
We only hear about that with Lee. But we don't get to see it. Why did we never learn more about Lee's FIRST daughter who disappeared? That was intriguing as hell, and it's mentioned in one episode and dropped. Why? Bad writing and clueless direction.
So anyway Lana shows up to give Lee the rub. It didn't work, obviously.

Except their situations were really not similar in the slightest. It felt so forced - and I loved this season.
                How were their situations similar?

I think they were similar because they killed to survive, in a sense. They are both controversial. But I think it felt forced because it was Lee who insisted they were similar. She wanted to make it seem like her actions were justified.

but pretty much every character in AHS has killed to survive at some point.
They both experienced horrific ordeals and profited off it afterwards. That's the extent of their similarities.

I see your point. I think that was incorporated into the story, though. In the end, Lee was hunted down and killed herself because she knew that her life would never end peacefully, while Lana admitted she killed those men and is seen as a hero.

No one said she was going to play a huge part in the finale. That's what you thought would happen and obviously you were disappointed. But what was she supposed to do if that were the case? Hunt ghosts with Lee the entire episode?

Considering she was the only character alongside Lee to be show in the only promo for 6x10 I thought it implied she was going to be a much bigger part of the episode or have her inclusion involve some sort of purpose. As for hunting ghostsdid I say that's what she should'be been doing? I thought she was going to really crack Lee's cold front and despite the majority of the world think Roanoke was a hoax she at the end could'be been swayed by Lee to truly believe.
As for Lee and Lana showing similarities. I think the point of them both killing to survive was supposed to be hammered home with the reference to Lana killing Bloodyface Jr. Both women have controversially killed to survive.

I don't think we needed any more of her. Her character was a nice addition to the season and finale for long term AHS an Asylum fans. Nothing more was needed really.

I enjoyed her return and showing that she is still how she was at the end of Asylum. Full of herself. The way she made the interview about herself and making these comparisons between her and Lee. So self absorbed. I enjoyed it very much.

I agree with you. If were going to dredge up the past, I like it to tie in in an interesting way.
i dont mind the small fun nods, like the realtor from season 1 returning in season 5, or the rules of the ghosts being similar between seasons (though this is the third season to use ghosts so heavily and its getting a little tired) but its getting tiresome seeing them connect the dots in a way that doesn't connect any dots.
like when sidibe came into season 5 and was just killed off unceremoniously.
even within this show, there should be a STRONG reason to cross over. Simpsons and family guy have both gone to beep over the year, but their crossover was considered pretty well done because it allowed an interesting interaction between the characters. the way they riffed off of each other was great.
