Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — A Viking Saga: The Darkest Day

So, I just came home from seeing this at the cinema in Neath, after the film was shown, there was a Q&A with the producer.
During the session, he said that the difference between this film and the big Hollywood movies, is that it's not sugar coated. This film is about the dark ages, they wanted to show how brutal the dark ages really were. Yes, there's rape and violence but that's how it was back then, and I personally think it's a great thing that they've kept in all the violence, it makes it more realistic.
Also, the films budget was only 100,000 and anyone should know that that isn't exactly a large amount of money. So for it's low budget I think the quality of this film is excellent.
I've given this a high rating as it is really well done and well scripted. You can see that a lot of research went into this, and they didn't just make things up as they go along, like some of the bigger movies do. Also, this film was set and filmed in the Neath Port Talbot area, which is where I live, so a little biased there 🙂

It's great that you had the opportunity to talk with the producer!
As to the "lot of research went into this":
Did you talk about it where they found sources about the Northmen raping old monks?
(that was very much discussed here)

Conceded you didn't read the whole board before you answereddon't do that either.
The exact text passage you quoted was discussed last summerhere on this board in another thread.

This was my answer (the discussion became a little heatedly):

          .
          .
Perhaps you should read your own quote somewhat more exactly.
          Especially this one:
"suggesting that the term refers to rape"
"It is not known how widespread the practice of raping defeated foes actually was, or if it existed before the advent of Christianity, but in other cultures"
          Assuming is not evidence.
I never denied the nordic homosexuality and that men had been raped in the past and nowadays.
          The question stays unanswered:
Were the Vikings famous for raping old monks?
Alas, the question is still unanswered but have to admit that I didn't read any further in the meantime.
And cause never have read something about it, dare to say:
The Vikings did NOT rape old monks!

He didn't actually say 'when we researched, we found that men were being raped' but that's hat he implied by saying the reason that rape scene is in the film is because they wanted to show how dark the times were.
So, I'm assuming that what he meant by that was, yes, that did happen.
I haven't personally done the research into this myself, and I'm not going to. But I appreciate the fact that he said he did do the research and I trust that what's being portrayed in this film is true.
I don't actually understand why there is so much emphasis on this scene, I've seen far worse scenes in other films! And like I said, the scene is in the film purposely to show how dark the dark ages actually were and personally I think that's a good thing!
