Yes! Btw what a neat lair that is, under the tree roots. It's by the river and there's very loud birdsong. A very desirable piece of real estate indeed.
Yes, it looks well chosen.

After almost 200 years, the wolves are back in North Rhine-Westphalia.
For some, they're an enrichment of the ecosystem β for many farmers they're primarily a nuisance.

Golden jackal or wolf? Experts are now sure
A driver on Rittnertstrasse could hardly believe his eyes when a large, dog-like animal ran in front of his car. He quickly pulled out his cell phone and filmed the four-legged creature. Was there perhaps a wolf roaming the residential area?
The city is now responding to the video.

Update, April 11, 2025 15.00 p.m.: City confirms mysterious animal is a golden jackal
Responding to a request from ka-news.de, the city administration confirmed that the animal filmed was a golden jackal. The video was sent to the city and forwarded to the Baden-WΓΌrttemberg Forest Research Institute (FVA) in Freiburg for identification.
Experts there confirmed that a golden jackal did indeed cross the road in Durlach.

The biggest Problem for Shepherds isn't the Wolf
The mayor and the district administrator agree:
Given the increasing frequency of wolf attacks in the immediate vicinity of towns in the northern and southern Ilm district, it must be permissible to take action against particularly conspicuous animals.
They also expressed this during a meeting in the state parliament, where a motion was immediately introduced to relax the particularly strict protection status for wolves.
This in turn prompted reader reactions, again.

On the Lower Rhine, in the wolf territory of
"Gloria"
, the
notorious wolf
on radio and TV, who was threatened with being shot several times because she learned to jump fences, we stood with 450 sheep
for a year in sun, night, and fog without losing a single animal, while there were losses
in nearby herds that were inadequately protected.
The compatibility of wolves and grazing livestock farming is possible β provided we want it to be.
That's also demonstrated by the example of European countries where the wolf never disappeared.
Shepherds indeed face massive difficulties because their specific contribution to landscape conservation
and biodiversity is not truly recognized politically and economically.
But we shouldn't pretend that the wolf is their biggest problem.

β
There are now 4 wolf packs [

But what are the lynx actually doing?
An estimated 20 of the so-called brush-eared lynx now live in the state β in the border region with France.
Four births of lynx kittens were recorded in 2024, reports the Ministry of the Environment in Mainz.
Estimated 20 Lynxes now call Rhineland-Palatinate home.

EU Members allow faster Wolf Culling
EU member states approved a legislative amendment to speed up the culling of wolves.
They thus approved the EU Commission's proposal, according to which the wolf is no longer considered strictly protected, but the species' conservation should continue to be ensured. Among other things,
DNA analyses are no longer required.
For the regulation to enter into force, the European Parliament must still approve it.
EU member states must then formally adopt the amendment.
It's then up to the individual states whether to lower the protection status at their national level.

EU Countries approve Draft Law to speed up Wolf Culling
In Austria, the wolf is currently permitted to be culled by regulation.
Environmental NGOs consider culling unacceptable, even with a reduced protection status.
The wolf is a protected animal.
The wolf returned to Austria. 80 animals were recorded individually last year, and five packs [
families
].
Although the wolf is protected throughout the EU, hunting is still permitted in this country.
Currently, wolves that come too close to populated areas or are responsible for attacks are authorized for hunting by decree of the respective state government. A practice that conservationists consider illegal.
European law experts also warned of impending infringement proceedings.
