I don't like seeing animals getting killed in movies either, but then I realize that it's just a fake movie and they would be in prison if real animal murder took place.
Also, doesn't pretty much a lot of movies have that "Animals weren't harmed" notice or whatever?

Same here.
Like I finally got around to watching Conan Barbarian to fulfill my curiosity why it was so popular even though it is the type of movie I don't usually go for.
So I'm watching it. He kills some men in terrible ways. I can tolerate that.
Then he punches a camel in the face.
That's it.
Done.
Change the channel and don't bother with it ever again.

I can't watch the opening attack in "Jaws" with Chrissie. Her screaming is just too real.
I also cannot watch ANY of the death scenes from the original "The Omen". Father Brenann's doom, in particular, freaks me out. Those haunted eyes. He knows exactly where he is going and there is nothing he can do to make it not happen.
I can't watch the opening death scene in "Damien: Omen 2". I suffer from fairly extreme claustrophobia.
I cannot watch Phyllis get killed in "The Last House on the Left". What a potent death scene.
I cannot watch Angie Dickinson get slashed to death in the elevator in DTK. Bobbie's hatred towards Angie is palpable.
I cannot watch Heather Matarazzo get sliced up by that insane, blood thirsty witch in "Hostel 2". What a godawful movie that was.
I will never watch "The Devil's Rejects" again. What a slimy, seedy experience that was.
I cannot watch the ending of "Salo". The whole movie is pretty hard to take, but the final executions were horrific.

Try watching it stoned, like I did with a friend in the early 90's. We had to shut it off and put on a comedy….

when they are giving themselves blood tests by cutting their thumb pads with scalpels into a bio dish.

Oh, watching that scene stoned could go either way. But I would probably agree with you and the freak out factor would escalate.
If you're going to get stoned, you pretty much have to stick to silly comedies.
After I saw "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" in the theater, I went home and watched 8 hours of "The Love Boat". Very therapeutic.

It was too real to be taken any other way than serious and tragic. Like my flatmate said, she felt like she could feel the shark under Chrissie biting her.

stoned around that time too made me appreciate it. I hadn't liked it prior and had found it too slow and ponderous. Its still slow, just not boring.
I couldn't watch Striped Pajamas film. I really struggle with the holocaust theme.

I need to watch "Out of Africa" again. Though I always found Robert Redford a little boring. He's not smug or narcissistic like Warren Beatty, but I find him a little too aloof.
TBITSP was very hard to watch. There is a scene where the two adorable little boys are holding hands and it's a shattering scene.
I know what you mean about struggling with certain movie themes that are unpleasant in the extreme. The Italian "Life is Beautiful" was an interesting and somewhat effective movie that attempts to the turn the Holocaust horror on its head. Have you seen that one?

Redford is a bit one-note as an actor and he sometimes delivers his lines like he's giving a sermon, or a mouth-piece for his character's ideals rather than being the character. He's a screen presence/personality rather than an actors actor.
LIB is not a film I care to see again. I found it too superficial too.

Playing For Time
with Vanessa Redgrave, but that one is shattering too and I really need to be in the mood.
Come and See - '85
is a Russian stunner though and so much more. So elegiac and poetic in its visuals in many scenes and the main character is fascinating to watch. The hardcore real footage of concentration camps at the end is difficult to watch.

I didn't love LIB, either. I liked the concept more than what it achieved. It felt almost like a gimmick.
You have mentioned "Come and See" before, Toasty. I often see it pop up on most disturbing films lists. Is it about a boy who is shell shocked?

Though I don't know if I will watch it. The older I get, the more sensitive I become and I was already pretty sensitive to begin with.
That first pic with the dead cow lying on the ground was as far as I got. Now I'm not one of those people who says they like animals more than people, but there was something so pitiful about the image.
I usually forget about it, but one of my favorite movies, "In a Year with 13 Moons", has a horribly graphic scene with cows in a slaughterhouse. It's not fake, either. It's a very effective scene as it reflects the main character's horribly mangled psyche, but I can never watch it again.
I hardly ever think about the fact that I think that cows are so cute, yet I still eat hamburgers.

Many places do plant based burger patties now and you can buy them in the supermarket.
Dressed up with the rest of the burger fillings, you can't really tell the difference.
I just feel it is a conditioning in a lot of people that if they aren't eating meat, they aren't getting the proper nutrients and vitamins they need. This may be the case for some though.

. I have seen it several times and that is more than enough, as stunning as it is and I would rather watch something less raw and distressing for the most part.
Depends on mood, because sometimes I may feel like a good dark, sick and twisted viewing, but one that can be fun at the same time.

Yes. She seems very cheery and sweet in real life and you'd never want to hurt her. Maybe that's why she's been cast in such roles that call for pathos.

The woman being thrashed about the water in darkness? Yeah. Those screams are real. I can't remember if it was something to do with the machine thrashing her about or something else. I read about it years ago.
