I remember Faber-Castell from when I was a kid. The quality of pencil is vital. The wrong quality can ruin every attempt, as can the wrong paper.
I've just ordered some new heavy bond paper. There aren't any paper stores near me, which sucks. I really prefer being able to feel the paper because texture is vital when drawing. I don't like flat, smooth paper. I need a degree of drag when using pencil, graphite or charcoal.
Dammit, that reminds me, I forgot to order erasers.
I just did a horror portrait of a woman, sort of a vampire clown, with bright blue eyes (there's almost 5 shades of blue in her eyes alone) and ginger hair (with at least 7 shades of red, auburn, black, brown, orange, gold and 2 shades of silver and grey streak on the left side), with green slime coming out of her eyes, purple pom-poms on her purple and grey frill collar and a lime green coil on the side of her hair. There are random drops of blood dribbled all over the portrait. Her eyebrows are flames. She's wearing black lipstick with hints of purple. If you look closely, you'll see blue eyes being hidden in the hair and frills of her collar.

Are you really buying into the image Lilith portrays as a harmless, fun girl who just happens to cheer abusive men, super fangirl of the sadist Marilyn Manson, her affinity for living in darkness, her goth wardrobe and her macabre colored pencil artwork?

Oh no! Not the harmless fun girl who has an affinity for living in darkness, the macabre and a goth wardrobe. Oh no! Anything but that! The horror!

                    No, because it's a bit of a self-portrait with a goth edge.

I swear every Canadian kid had a pack of these while in school. They were cheap, but actually pretty decent to use.

I just purchased some and also just got some new heavy bond paper.
I've been commissioned to create a piece of art, and the parameters are pretty wide, so I need to think of something "neutral" since it's going to be in an office. My "style" tends to be pretty dark, so I have to tone it down. Way, way down. I have to tap into something new for this. This should be interesting.
                          I'm open to suggestions.

I would think it would have to be something that would complement the office decor. It wouldn't matter if you were using grayscale only.

                              I totally agree.
I'm a bit out of my depth because I have a very particular and specific style that is not very family friendly, so when asked to complete something more "normal", it really takes a lot out of me. It's more challenging than you'd think.

Give it to your subconscious then let it go. An idea will come to you while you're distracted.
