Defenetly one of the scariest closing logos. The darkness of it, the loud bang, and especially the laugh. What was up with the laugh anyway?

No, I liked the laughter. It sort of sounded like Mac laughing to me. But the laughter wasn't in there until a season or two later, when the show really took off.

Starry Night was one of my favorites, along with Cannel, Sit Ubu Sit, Lorimar and a few others. I thought the MTM one with the cat was a little creepy though. lol

As I recall, I heard that it was actually an homage to Harry Anderson's appearances on Cheers.
Apparently, the closing logo and laugh were like this. The crack was the crack of a bat hitting a baseball. The flash WAS the baseball being launched into the night sky (over Chicago). The laughter was actually "Coach" from Cheers (Nicholas Colasanto) laughing at another homerun given up by Sam, "Mayday Malone" while he was pitching in Chicago for the Red Sox.
Listen again to the laughter. It sounds exactly like coach's laugh. And listen again to the "crack" sound. It's definitely a bat crushing a fat fastball.
