Batman is not needed here, this is a fact.

Batman is only needed to help sell the DVDs. He's the DC/Warner cash cow so they generally lean on him even when its terribly unnecessary.

Yeah when destiny started beep up an entire city making everyone see everyone else as demons the first thing I thought was "this level of chaos SHOULD attract the attention of Dr. Fate, where is he?!"

Never mind Fate; I was curious if we'd see the Spectre at all in this. If not here then maybe in a sequel.

He'll be back, they still have to do their ill conceived adaptation of the Titans Judas Contract storyline.

I totally see where everyone's coming from but I guess I'm biased because I'm a Batman fan, first and foremost. He was my first introduction into superheroes and as a kid (by contrast, I'm 30 now) I grew up with "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Batman Beyond." I wasn't really a Superman fan, though, and I can't even remember if I regularly watched his animated series (except for maybe during the "Batman/Superman Hour." Then I started getting a little older and I found interest in other things. (I also never read comics when I was younger and had migrated away from those shows before "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited," therefore I was never really introduced to any other part of the DC Universe at the time.)
So, now that I got that out of the way, I'm actually loving this new continuity and for those who don't like Jason O'Mara as Batman, I'm quite surprised. Yes, Kevin Conroy has been the voice of the Bat for nearly 25 years and he's loved and respected, but Jason hasn't replaced him Conroy is still Batman in Elseworld's tales and others not-in-this-continuity. There was a need for a fresh face when they launched this new line with "Justice League: War" and "Son of Batman."
I think his presence is required in this film (though, to which degree, I don't really know) because, as others have stated, he is the one who recognizes the supernatural threats that the JL are no match for; and I believe that he either knows or knows of Constantine and Zatanna, so for him to approach them in order to form a proper response team makes sense. And from what I've read once the team is formed, Batman takes the backseat to John Constantine, the Hellblazer, and it becomes his and his fellow mystical friends' show. (Though I could be wrong.) I think they're just marketing him, like others have said, and putting him up front with John in the trailers to help the film sell. I truly don't think it'll be just another 'Batman & Friends' movie.
Other than that, I've actually been a bit bummed lately that there've been no new plans to expand on Batman's Universe, post-Bad Blood (especially given that final scene). They're in a position there to tell such a great story about, not just Batman, but the Batfamily now that they're all in place. Instead, we're getting another "Batman '66" and the "Batman and Harley Quinn" movie next year that I'm presuming will be an out-of-continuity, Elseworld's tale. I'm getting off track now, so that's all.

I'm not the biggest O'Mara fan but he does a decent job. That said, I kind of wish they'd gotten Bruce Greenwood from
                    Under the Red Hood
                    and
                    Young Justice
to sub for Conroy in the video movies.

Greenwood did a fantastic job in Under the Red Hood.

It's beent hat way for years, and it really shows that WB producers have no fckin clue what to do with their assets.

Batman was in the original comic arc too, just not in a starring role.

They're trying to attract people who only know the big three, the only reason WW isn't used in the same way is because she has the weakest fanbase of the three by a lot.
The top three recognized characters by non-comicbook readers are Batman, Superman and Spider-man in that order, they're milking it because they're in it for the short term gain just like everyone else in business since the last 30 years and don't care that they might exhaust their fanbase with the names.

Well he's not really a major part, there are some moments but for the most part he seems to just stay in the background of things.

It's not about Batman, he's basically the character we go along with and the one the audience has the most connection.. also it's a business decision.

Using Batman makes business sense he is the most bankable character DC has, the problem is with them using him in so many projects the market will just end up flooded with the character and it distracts from allowing the other characters to shine.

Right. Thematically, the film needs a non-magicked person to lend perspective. Like Scully's skepticism did for Mulder and the paranormal X-file events. Having only magicked characters, and adding in WW or Fate as well, might have been an overdose.
Even better, they used not just a non-magicked hero, but a non-powered one as well. More relatable. Coulda been Cyborg, I guess. But Batman's intentional flirtation with "darkness" works better here.
