Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Marvel/DC

Generally speaking, I'm more of a DC fan. I tend to root for their movies as I've always preferred their darker, more serious tone and better villains. I had/have very high hopes for their new fleet of titles. But whilst I loved Batman vs Superman (and am very keen to see Justice League), I have to admit that Suicide Squad is absolutely terrible. Considering its hype, it's one of the worst comic book films I've seen in recent years.
    So, why was it bad?
    Poor structure / story:
To be honest, I don't think there even was a structure to this movie. After a rushed and choppy introduction to each of the characters, a bunch of stuff just happens for them to fight. The story is non-existent. There's no central character to follow, or even a decent villain to understand/appreciate their motives. To sum up, it seems like they changed/re-edited the film AFTER they made it. Everything is so choppy and poorly edited, that you can't help but feel large chunks of it have been left out. Undoubtedly, this is not the movie that they started with.
    Forgettable action:
Okay, so the plot isn't very good. But as a comic book film, the action can salvage this, right? Wrong. It's not that the action is bad. It's just that there's nothing memorable about it. Batman vs Superman had the amazing first battle (followed up by the amazing Martha Kent rescue by Batman), and Civil War had the incredible airport fight. Suicide Squad has NOTHING. It tries very hard to create one meaningful/impactful sequence with Deadshot, but it is soooo underwhelming that you begin to feel sorry for them.
    Joker:
If you have high hopes for the amazing Jared Leto and the iconic Joker character that's contributed to most of the movie's hype, then prepare for an epic let-down. Firstly, he barely even features throughout the two hours. And secondly his introduction and the few scenes involving him, are so rushed and pointless in the grand-scheme of whatever the plot is. Again, when they edited this, Jared Leto's Joker became somewhat of an afterthought. There was no real insight into him, no progression, and quite frankly, you quickly lose any interest in him because his role is so meaningless. It's remarkable how badly they got this wrong!
    Uninteresting characters:
Harley Quinn quickly grows tiresome with her dittzy/crazy demeanour. If you've caught all of the trailers and promotional material beforehand, then you've already seen her best bits. The croc dude is pointless and just growls. The fire guy has a sympathetic backstory but offers very little. Jai Courtney is quite funny as the Australian bloke. And although Though I was cynical going in, Will Smith as Deadshot was surprisingly good (so props for that).
There are many other things wrong which, at this moment, I don't have the energy to put down. And as a viewer it's becoming increasingly frustrating to not get a good stand-alone comic book movie anymore. The producers are so franchise-focused that they concentrate more on setting up future instalments, than just making a good movie.

Everything you've just said is pretty much word for word what I said leaving the cinema tonight.

Glad you agree. Judging by the immediate reactions (mostly positive) on Social Media, I was expecting a heap of abuse after writing that. So thank you.

            Agreed.
The film actually starts off well then plummets around the time The Enchantress recruits her brother.
I'd add The Enchantress was an incredibly weak villain, poorly introduced and very poorly acted by Cara Delevigne.
            Also, the constant MUSIC. Ugh.

Yes I agree. The villain was terrible. What was with the weird dance she was doing at the end? And oh yes, the music was unfitting, too. Did they randomly throw Eminem in there? I didn't just imagine that, did I.

                You speak the truth.
Although I was enjoying the first 15 minutes Felt like the film was doing this portion to set up an epic main mission going forwards. But as soon as they finished preparing for the battle Everything was just a mess. Nothing made sense. The interaction and dialogue was terrible.
I wasted 2 hours and 20 bucks on this film (Australian tickets are expensive)
And I was cringing a lot.
It was just poorly done For a movie.
Maybe for a 2 hour trailer or a 2 hour music video it would fair better.
It was a crappy version of Expendables. Expendables was atleast cheesy intentionally and was making fun of itself. Suicide Squad actually thought it was being cool and evolutionary to the genre.

I imagine his job was made all the more difficult by having to leave out chunks of scenes/clips.

A handful of good performances can't overcome messy plotting, an obnoxious soundtrack and terrible villains.

Haven't seen the movie but those complaining about the RT rating don't have much to say about fan reviews aligning with it. The bad word of mouth will cause this movie to drop big time after the presale tickets are accounted for

Yeah, that's what I've found ironic, too. There's been a heavy backlash against the critics, with the notion that the fans have got what they wanted (and that's all that matters).
But that's not entirely true. Plenty of fans have called this movie out for being the disappointment it is. They agree with the critics.

                                  Exactly.
I really wanted this movie to succeed, but the truth is, it's regular film goers who are making the harshest, albeit presumably fairest, criticisms of this movie. Not simply the professional critics.

BvS, for me, was brilliant. I don't quite understand the hate it gets. The plot was somewhat okay, but Affleck's portrayal as Wayne/Bat really did elevate the overall film. Those fight scenes were incredible. I enjoyed every second of them.

Yeah, BvS was pretty good. I don't get the hate either - even if the movie doesn't work with someone, they should at least be able to respect the things it does well. Have we ever had better better Batman fight scenes? A Superman that feels appropriately powerful?
Different people have different opinions naturally, but it's hard to see how people could objectively think it's a terrible movie. And it's RT score is below Batman Forever, which is nuts.
