It may be hypocritical, but I understand it.
Whites are already well-represented on screen. You may not like it, but the goal is to diversify representation screen. That does not occur with white washing.
I've never gone to the movie and thought, "It stinks that there are no movies starring white people playing."
Where are the Asian characters DC CW? #MoreAsians -

Like, I'm of two minds about this. On one hand, obviously it sucks, bc she's not Latina and there are a lot of Latina actresses to choose from in LA, so it not like they'd have to look real hard to find one. Why bother color-bending a white character if you're just going to hire an Italian chick to play her?
On the other hand, she doesn't look any different than a person from Latin America (I can't remember where Maggie's family is supposed to be from). Many people from Latin America are as aryan looking as Giselle Bunchen, and some are even Asian (Harry Shum Jr is actually Costa Rican!). They could've made an effort to cast an actual Latina who looked traditionally Latina, but then againwhat is 'traditionally Latina'? I've seen so many people complain about Laurel from HTGAWM being too white when the character is Mexican, and the actress is actually from Mexico.
The reality is, if you're a working actor who is Italian/Jewish/Arab/Greek/Latin, you've most likely been cast as a few of these ethnicities at some point. Or if you're John Turturro, Oscar Isaac or Oded Fehr, you've played all of them.
Then again, it's easier not to care when I'm not a Latina trying to make it as an actress in Hollywood -

The subject line is misleading Floriana is not being accused of whitewashingthe people that hired her are.
I think Floriana is talented, and fits the part. I didn't know anything about her heritage and, based on my ignorance, thought she was latina.
I love her on the show. -

I thought she was Latina. I think it's an instance of Berlanti letting diverse people try out for a role and not changing the part depending on who is hired.

Floriana is whiter than Jessica. Jessica has around 20%-30% Native American ancestry via her Mexican ancestry. Floriana is 3/4 Italian and the rest is English, Irish, and German. Looks can be deceiving.

First off, the character is white to begin with. Lima's character, both in terms of looks and personality, is much more similar to Renee Montoya than Maggie.
Second, being Latino doesn't exclude someone from being white, black or Asian. Not all Latinos are mixed 'brown' people media makes them out. If you look at US race chart, more than half of US Latinos are white. Mexicans can also be white. Most Argentinians are white.
I am actually sick and tired of this 'whitewashing' crap. As someone who is essentially a Liberal, I am barfing on all this counting blood cells of tv stars. That was once only a right-wing bull and now Liberals are doing it even more. -

Yeah, she looks a LOT more like Renee Montoya than Maggie Sawyer. Supergirl also seems to have taken out the fact that Maggie is a mother, which is a pretty important element of her character.
Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything. -

Maggie Sawyer is supposed to be Latina? She's usually been depicted as a blonde haired white woman. Floriana Lima is a lot LESS white looking than Maggie Sawyer has been. I assumed that she was Indian based on her looks.
I think that the bigger controversy is that Maggie in the comics has been portrayed as more butch, whereas Lima is a lot more femme and seems chosen to appeal more to the male gaze.
Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.
