    Fair enough.
Was I supposed to understand Sinestro as much as I did? I mean, I don't think it was okay he killed all those GLs, but his assessment of the Guardians was pretty spot-on: "a bunch of bickering old bitties" sounds about right to me

Sinestro was one of the best lantern agents. Because of his good reputation noone suspected he would betray the core. Everyone thought he was their friend, so they didn't think he'd do anything bad, even if he was a bit grumpy every now and then. Hal Jordan came to the core without any knowledge of who Sinestro was. So he could view him with a new set of eyes. Also, Sinestro confided in him more than the others because he thought Hal would understand his views. And Hal was "the new guy" and also was the replacement for a much loved GL. Of course he wouldn't get a lot of respect out of the other lanterns. Sinestro, on the other hand, was more or less a sociopath and didn't really care about those things. He only thought about what would benefit himself the most, as you say.

Apart from the spelling of "corps" that's a spot on analysis.

to me, it seemed awful risky to put all your eggs in one basket by having the single battery as the single poin of failure, but then again, modern society and military seem to be like that too, so I digress.
I was also disappointed that the Guardians "telekeinetic wind" wasn't enough to stop Sinestro, but if their powers are based upon or similar to the green energy, then go figure. Of course, there's also the "Hollywood reason" for having a final showdown between Hal and Sinestro

Every Green Lantern story i ever read or watched. The Guardians have always been sort of dickish.

Sinestro didn't see the potential in Jordan. He just thought that because he was new he could more easily get him as an ally.

I disagree with that. Notice how Sinestro got a rather big grin on his face when Jordan told the Guardians they could stick it if they didn't want to accept him as a GL?
I know Sinestro is manipulative and self-serving, but he's also highly intelligent and aware. I honestly saw this as Sinestro seeing Jordan's potential.

One of the things I have always liked about Sinestro was the fact everyone was oblivious to his rather obvious evil. Besides his behavior, this is a guy who is a pair of horns and tail away from looking like a cartoon depiction of Satan andAND his name is Sinestro.
I do realize that the slick black hair, pencil mustache, red/pink skin thing is very much an earth concept of the devil and that perhaps names are translated phonetically by the ring into alien languagesbut it is still like hiring a guy named Evil-o to be a space cop.
It's no wonder Hal is on to him first. When he got introduced to him he should have said:
"Really?? Your best good guy is named
                    Sinestro
and he has an actual villain mustache to twirl? Who did you hire to babysit your kids.. a sweaty guy with a beard living in a windowless van who's name was
                    Molestro
                    ?"
Like I said, I am not actually complaining about this aspect of the character because I like it. I was amused at Sinestro calling the Guardians "gnomes" and bitching about them behind their back. It makes me wish he had enough knowledge of Earth culture to call them "smurfs". Nobody ever liked the Guardians anyways. Pretentious blue &%$#@s.
