Beltran Hated Voyager?

I heard an interview with Garrett Wang where he said that Kate Mulgrew was such a bitch and made life on set so unpleasant after the introduction of Jeri Ryan that everybody began to hate it. Might be something to do with that.

He didn't hate Voyager IMO, going by what he's said in full interviews and at cons - once you get past the shock headlines gleefully leapt upon by some people who seem to love to take much of what he says out of context. I've come to feel that he hated the lost potential of Voyager and the dumbing down of a great show and a great cast of characters and actors. In the early seasons he was always very positive about the show. But, he's certainly said what a lot of Trek fans and specifically Voyager fans have also said over the years ie: Voyager could have been so much more if the writers/UPN had been willing to take some risks. He's pretty blunt about it and he answers questions honestly, which I like.
When he took his concerns to the writers he was told not to worry about it and to run along and learn his lines, so he admits he stopped trying. Was that the right thing to do? Personally, I don't think so, but I wasn't there and I don't know exactly what he went through so I wouldn't dream of putting myself in his head at that or any other time. As I said, I'm only going by quotes/interviews etc. He's said what he's said, he's done what he's done. His call
I just enjoy what he gave me on the show and also thank him for my continued enjoyment of fan fic because of what he did -

I heard pretty much the same thing. And towards the end, he wanted out of the show in order to pursue other roles but TPTB wouldn't let him.
He is very blunt about the show, outspoken with his opinions whether they agree with the writers and network or not. When the show was still on, this rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Hence part of the controversy.
I've met him on several occasions. Always nice. And I mean always. I donated a cheap bottle of wine autographed by four Voyager actors to a silent auction once. While the function raised several thousands of dollars, my donation brought in barely $100. Still, this merited a hug from himvery warm, yet completely unexpected on my part. Totally did not see it coming and the next thing I knew, he was up and around the table with arms outstretched. Nice.
I also heard that he wasn't much of a sci-fi fan, which I found ironic in that his biggest tv moment to date is Voyager and one of his biggest movie moments is Night of the Comet. Both sci-fi. LOL -

Contracts were all up after season 6. Mulgrew almost didn't return.
He could have left if he really had as much integrity as that, but he didn't/doesn't.
He was right about EVERY gripe he ever made about Star Trek but he knew TPTB were right. A regular job on television is worth selling your soul. It's a bitch of a job, 16 hour days, but the money is insane. 7 years of it is "set for life" type money.
I don't blame him for staying, but lets not pretend he didn't have a choice. -

bvdi001, you may want to do some searches on what Robert Beltran has actually said in interviews. His statements are all over the internet.

It seems a lot of the fans get upset. And, some of uslike mejust agree with him. I'm more upset about the lost potential of Voyager than in RB pointing it out.
As for me, I like RB and I really wanted to see more of Chakotay. As it was, he was reduced to saying "Sheilds down to 60%" and "Red Alert" a lot. Which is a long way down from being the Maquis leader and First Officer his character was set up for!!! I do enjoy the oh too few Chakotay based eps there are.
And, yes, a lot of the reactions by the fans are to things he has said but taken completely OUT OF CONTEXT. One fan at the Voyager board insisted he was making light of the holocaust!!! Come on!!!
Yes, he's very outspoken and open about his feelings about V'ger. He's quite a character in his own right.
I hope he gets to do some more movies like "Luminarias"which was GREAT!!!!

It's pretty clear that he hated the creative direction of the show from about season 4 onwards. He and most of the supporting cast were angry with their lack of screen time and developmentand honestly by the end of the show, most of characters other than Seven, Janeway and the Doc were all really just doing the same thing week after week.

I get why people might think that he hates the show. I think it's more of he hates what was done with the show, rather than the show itself. I don't hate Voyager I hate the amount of potential that was wasted. I hate Voyager the same way I hate the last season of Roswell. And Roswell is one of my favorite shows.
I think disappointed is a better word to use than hate.
I'm catching up on eps on Spike and every ep is either Seven disobyeing orders, Tom and Be'Lanna fighting or creatures who need help but they have to abide by the rules.
There was a lot of unused potential.

I think Voyager got a lot better after Janeway evoloved(when he hair was cut) I can see that he may have thought his character needed more in the way of a script. He was not equal to Riker which is what was needed. I guess because he was Maqi and Janeway never trusted him. But I didn't like the fact that some of the crew came from the Maqi anyway. That was not needed. I loved the storyline of he and Seven at the end. They did the best they could considering DS9 was running at the same time and probably took some of the energies-creativeness away. In Sci Fi it depends on the villian. If you don't have a good villian it's not memorable(Darth Vader, Klingons,borg.)

What was this? Can't remember as it's ages since i've seen it? and for that matter how did it end? Did they get home? I have seen it but couldn't have had a lasting memory on me. It's being repeated on Virgin in the UK, but only just started.

Voyager, like DS9, Enterprise, and TNG is the reason why Star Trek suffered from franchise fatigue during this time. If anything, I'm glad that those four useless spinoffs have been erased by the new Star Trek prequel/reboot.
Nothing can top the original Star Trek and nothing ever will.
