Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Roscoe Arbuckle

It's interesting the big scandal of his that happened in the early years of Hollywood. He was definitely the first major star to be hit by that. Other stars would follow suit with their own big scandals in the next several decades to follow. Too bad the bad publicity damaged his career, but all that occurred so long ago in a time when society was entirely different from the way it is today.
The more I study it, the greater the puzzle becomes.

Only if Arbuckle's story was done right.

This and the William Desmond Taylor murder are crying out to be made into decent movies or multi part tv dramas, superb subject matter.

I believe that if it happened today, the result would be the same. The courts are still too star struck to behave professionally when a celebrity is involved, "witnesses" can still be bought, blackmailed, or have their own agenda, the public prefers salacious gossip to the truth and 90% of all people consider overweight people to be deviant, guilty, criminals.
Nothing has changed in 93 years. That is the real crime.

Before his untimely death, Chris Farley was in talks to do a movie about him. That would have been an incredible biography/drama!!

A film on Arbuckle would probably play hard and loose with the facts.
