Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Myrna Loy

( out of the ones you've seen)
I've just watched 'Vanity Fair' [
    http://www.imdb.com/board/10023652/
    ]
This movie wasn't terrible, just not very good. It was watchable though. It just seemed very, very ordinary.

    • so, what's your choice?

Man Proof (1938) is my vote. The plot is silly and melodramatic and its conclusion is just plain stupid, it's like they were running out of time so they just ended it quickly. Myrna's character changes her mind on a dime with no explanation. One second she hates the guy, then she loves him.
Thirteen Women (1932) is no gem either, but it is so ridiculous that it's funny, which kinda saves it for me. "So bad, it's good"! Sweet darling little Myrna playing an ASIAN serial killer! If you see the Thin Man movies and then see this you can't help but being shocked: What is Nora Charles doing???!! It's very laughable.
I haven't seen many of her silents, so I am not sure about those. From what I hear not all are great.

        The Barbarian
. It's incredibly offensive and badly-written to boot.

          Another vote for
          Vanity Fair
          here. Extremely weak indeed.

Have never seen VANITY FAIR but it was a dirt cheapie Myrna made between studio contracts with Warners and MGM. One movie I don't like is THE ANIMAL KINGDOM because Leslie Howard and that friend of his treat Myrna so bad - she is a spoiled type but she really isn't a villain - and act as if that bland Ann Harding is the choice he should have made.

              I agree with you about
              The Animal Kingdom
. They try and make Myrna the villain, but they don't succeed in making her "evil" enough to justify bland old Leslie Howard leaving her for bland old Ann Harding. Ann is a big old yawn in everything I have ever seen her in. Why would any man with blood pumping in his veins leave Myrna for Ann?
              Just not conceivable!

Totally disagree with you guys on The Animal Kingdom. Loy does a terrific job playing a consummate "user" of a wife. I agree that it's hard to work up a whole lot of sympathy for Leslie Howard; I'd much rather have seen Fredric March in the part. Ann Harding I thought was okay, but this is one of Loy's best, most uncharacteristically unsympathetic and grown-up roles, and she handles it beautifully.
Loy fans, make a note to see this. It's too stagy and talky to be a great film, but it's a memorable Loy performance.

I agree, it's a very sensitive, well-written, well-acted and engaging film. I'm no Howard apologist, but it's one of his more bearable characterisations and Myrna is fine in it.
there was one i saw where she played this gypsy girl and it was so campy. forgot the name of it.
                  That's
                  The Squall
, which is simply an abomination, though nothing can touch
                  The Barbarian
in terms of sheer, teeth-aching awfulness. As the only Myrna film that attempts to justify rape, I'd like to c2000hampion it as the hands-down winner.

i also think vanity fair wasn't really that good either.

She was miscast in FROM THE TERRACE as Paul Newman's alcoholic mother. No wonder it was her last theatrical film.

I vote for "Arrowsmith" boring, and most of Myrna's part has been cut, I think by censors. Sad.
I didn't enjoy "From the Terrace," but its awfully pleasant gazing at Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.
And "Rogue of the Rio Grande" is pretty dreadful, but I suppose that's mostly because of technological limitations. Still, the portrayals of Mexicans are pathetic all around.

Here in Blighty her films so rarely surface I'd love to have had the luxury of seeing enough to pick out the duds; even the classics are as rare as hens teeth.

She gave the best performance in Animal Kingdom by far. I wanted her to lose Leslie Howard because I thought Myrna's character could do a hell of a lot better. Let him go off with the dreary Ann Harding. Howard's character was weak in that. As a husband, he brought nothing to the table.
I haven't seen any of her worst movies, but considering how they churned them out in the 1920s and 1930s, I'm sure there are some awful movies.
