I think that is a standout performance from him. He and Mirren both steal the show in that film.
I also think he is good in "The Singing Detective" as well.
Great that he loves cars and engineering as well. His other appearances are on HIGNFY, Room 101 and Top Gear are funny. -

I loved The Cook, The Thief too. It's a hard film to like, but I've sat through it more than once (being American, I had a lot of catching up to do with accents and so on) with a most bizarre ending and plenty of grotesquerie and horror in the details. But the music, the food, Helen Mirren eating asparagus, lovers reading books, a certain operatic quality strong stuff.
