update. i really like season 2 epi 1. solid writing and good satire on corporate culture and academia. so i have good feelings for whole season if all like epi 1. nice "cheers" homage with opening sequence.
note to self: gotta learn the make of his suit. great cut and lines.
    Ok, thanks.
    Won't change anything anymore.

They know or maybe they don't, but it's well known that if you have the right image and suck up to the right people you'll get an award. So many brilliant actors are overlooked while mediocre ones win especially the SAG awards. That being said john lithgow deserves his win. He's great in the role but truthfully any great british actor could do the role justice.

  • Lithgow as Churchill? You must be joking!

So why on Earth was he expecting not to live in Buckingham Palace when she became queen and for his children to take his name?
The name issue had nothing to do with her. Keeping the name "Windsor" even though it is a fake name to begin with and the Queen was the last of the "Windsors" anyway was a purely political thing pushed on the Royal Family by the commoner scum in Parliament. Phillip is not objecting to her being Queen with that quibble. He is objecting to people far beneath them dictating that they change their family name! It was an insult to Phillip as a man and an even greater insult to Elizabeth's royal dignity. Remember, Phillip was a member of the Greek Royal family and knew all too well the dangers of allowing the rabble to dictate terms to the monarchy.

Agreed. Inspired writing and character/relationship development. Classy and absorbing. Educational - but without ever feeling like homework.
And then if you want to talk about cinematography and sets and costumes > off-the-charts.
As a guy whose favorite series' are The Wire and Deadwood and The Sopranos, I did not anticipate The Crown as maybe completing my Mount Rushmore.
    But it's possible.
Gotta keep it up for more than 1 season though - so we'll see.

Oh good, someone noted his Nazi sympathies. Had he been king, I'm sure Britain would have become a Nazi satellite.
Then you are an idiot. Hitler never had any ambitions in Western Europe. According to Speer, Hitler frequently remarked that had Edward not abdicated, Germany and England would have remained at peace.
So the likely outcome of Edward remaining on the throne was not German domination, but rather a half million Englishmen would have not thrown their lives away for nothing in a pointless war.

  • Does Edward get a little too much hate by the family?

Wrong, those properties were personally owned by the monarch, they were not part of the crown estate and upon the death of his father passed directly to him, in his personal capacity. Please provide evidence she was a NAZI.
