Let's Poddy, I also have no children, and have chosen to never have them. It's not that I don't like kids. I love kids. I just know that I'm a selfish person, and know that I wouldn't make the greatest mother. I'm thrilled when I spend a day with my nieces or nephews, but afterwards, I'm happy to give them back to their parents, and then I go home, indulge in a glass (or three) of wine, and have my alone time. I relish that time, and know that with kids, I wouldn't have it. In addition, my mom also ran a daycare out of our house for 10 years while I was still living there. I was the one who always helped out, and when those kids needed a babysitter for evenings, I was the first one they called to see if I could help out. I've changed more than enough dirty diapers, fed enough kids from bottles, and soothed so many tantrums from kids, that I really don't feel the need to do anymore. And yes, people always say that it's different with your own kids. But I choose to not find out if that's true or not. Everyone looks at me odd when I say I don't want them, but I know that I've made the right decision for me.

As for having children. It's quite annoying that society makes those who choose not to have them feel as though there is something wrong with them.
I have never been set out aside, one because I'm not married, or I don't have childrenyes I've been asked, whyand I say, I just don't..if they are true people that are with youthey won't judge you in the long runso
yes, some choose not to have children..but if they judge you just because you don't.then don't think there's something wrong with youthink that there's something wrong with them.and maybe seek out others..that don't
I know quite a few women of all ages that don't have kids..yes, most of them are over 50.some got married late in life, and they couldn't have them at that timeso the opportunity was lost to them
but, never, but never have I been made to feel bad because I don't have kids.and if someone was to make me feel that way..then, I'd ask them why.
      susan
my reaction would be, I never met someone that I wanted to have children with..i don't know if I couldn't have them.so..
but turning 50 in six monthsthat chance has now passedso
It's MY life it's MY choice why should anyone else care but me?
      amen to that line
and the person saying that she didnt' have kids because they were bratsplease..that's not a way to go.and to judge a woman that had kids.how do you know what they're likeyou don't know..
ok, I will stop saying now
and you know whatyes, some actresses adopted kids, but yet treated them like crapso.that's not always a good thing either.

Quite a few famous people did the same thing and have no children. Greta Garbo was also one.
I remember looking at the Wikipedia article of a 60 year old male director (unfortunately I don't recall the name) who never married or had kids. I suggested they were infertile to a relative but she said they really don't want to be parents since they could have adopted.

I know I do. I wish people would stop thinking having children = happiness. It doesn't. As many have said, the world is overpopulated. How about loving a caring for the people who are already here instead producing more that no one will care about!!!!

That was my thesis for my persuasive speech last February. I had to persuade prospective parents to adopt instead of having biological children. I argued that the world is overpopulated, that we're running out of resources, that there are many children who need loving homes, not to mention that adopting a child avoids costly and sometimes risky fertility procedures.

Greta Garbo is not a very good example - if memory serves, she was a lesbian.

Not sure where you're getting this memory from. I read her biographies and she was actually engaged but left her husband-to-be at the altar. Never showed up.
She indeed slept with many men to the point where she got pregnant and aborted.

Wow, she chickened out? What a surprise NOT!
She had an affair with Joan Crawford. Do you own search.

What's "doing your own search" going to prove? I bet there's an article out there making lesbian/gay allegations about so many actors and actresses!

Lillian Gish was another good example of such. Wikipedia offers bios with quite a few women that had never married and never had kids and they were born in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Some still got married but did not have kids

To answer the OP's question: She doesn't want them.
Same reason she hasn't been married since 1981. I can't imagine she hasn't met a nice man since then.
But I still think that's WHY she has lived so long, and lived so healthy. No husband, no kids.

I'm not sure why she never had kids only she would know the answer. My guess would be either she couldn't have them or she didn't want any. Could be many reasons.

Maybe she didn't want any kids. Judith Light said that the reason she didn't have kids was not because she didn't want them, but because with a career and being a mother she couldn't do both. Maybe Betty White felt the same way

She has said multiple times that she was always devoted to her career and didn't think she'd make a good mother because of it, she is extremely close to her step-children to this day. And is very involved in their lives, just never had any children of her own.
