Ireland was still under British rule during the famine and our government made matters worse for them.

Jeezus christ. Do you also deny that the British Empire was one of the greatest 'nations' ever? It brought parliamentary government to the world. Without the British you'd probably still have some autocratic Raj ruling India. It ended up being about bringing democratic government and technology to the world.
If Britain made the Irish famine worse, very well. Still, compare the two nations. Ireland buckled under to a goddamn potato blight.
Ulster is better off staying in the U.K.

Yeah, we looked after that country so well only one million people died during the famine. It’s one of the reasons why thousands decided to go live in the US (a country that also didn’t appreciate the way we governed them).

Okay. I see a parallel between your attitude towards the U.K. and the attitude of American liberals towards the U.S. Sure, we need to expose the injustices of our own countries. But it can become egregious and stifling.

Nah, I was just pointing out the difference between a successful country like the U.K. and a backwards one like Ireland.

No, I've never been there. I'm talking historically over the centuries. Ireland was always considered one of the poor men of Europe. Of course now, anywhere in Europe is superior to anywhere else.

Ireland is a far different place to what it was even 60 years ago. It's been a pretty modern country with a highly, highly literate population that, coupled with lots of corporate tax breaks so that high-tech and branch-plants would move there, made its economy roar for quite a long time.
Also you should realize that Ireland did quite well from the EU. -

I had heard that. They call it the Celtic Tiger in comparison to the successful Asian Tigers like Singapore and Taiwan.

Are you complete against the British Empire? You don't think it did any good by bringing democracy to countries like India?

It was a mixed bag but we certainly benefited from it. I think one of the more ignorant jibes thrown at the Empire was that we were just conquering primitive people but we were also fighting other European countries for these lands at the same time.
