even though he was the initial choice to play cady (when spielberg was first choice for director).

Okay, taking this thread a bit more seriously than was perhaps intended
I disagree with several of these. Not saying that any of the following would have been anywhere near as good as De Niro hell, even Robert Mitchum wasn't as good in the role as De Niro but all of the following, I think, have demonstrated the necessary acting chops to play Max Cady at some point or another in their careers, plus they have (unlike, say, Johnny Depp) a suitable-enough body build:
Robin Williams Has demonstrated at times that he has serious acting talent, even when playing a "dead serious" role quite the opposite of his usual comic roles. For instance, I recall him playing an enraged bereaved husband (or was that a bereaved father whose daughter was killed? foggy memory here) on some TV show or another. I didn't see Mork, I saw the character he was playing.
Ray Romano Something tells me he could have done it, at least when he was in his prime. As with a lot of these guys, it takes some major acting skills to play comedy as brilliantly as they have, and those same skills sometimes translate quite well into serious drama.
Jeremy Piven I'm convinced this guy has a lot more acting talent than most people think he does.
Leslie Nielsen When he was younger, yes.
                              Rodney Dangerfield Ditto.
                              Will Ferrell See Piven.
                              Bill Murray Oh, definitely.
Tom Hanks Can play almost any role.
Brad Pitt Would have to make an effort to bulk up, the same as De Niro did, but definitely has the acting chops.
Charlie Sheen Hey, he's so menacing in
                              real life
I leave off David Schwimmer only because his face practically screams "Jewish," and just as with the black actors e.g. Eddie Murphy, I can't see bringing ethnicity into it. De Niro could play "intelligent white trash" and make you forget he's Italian-American. Talented as he is, I don't think Schwimmer can make you forget he's Jewish.
Some of the others, like e.g. Brendan Fraser, I leave off because I just don't know enough about them; some who've been listed, I've never even heard of. Some, like Schwarzenegger, I leave off because they're
                              too
                              traditionally masculine for the role.
                              P.S. I would love to see a
                              Mexican
remake of the 1991 remake, with an all-Mexican cast. Subtitles only, please, I hate dubbing. "Cabo Temor," anybody?
                              "I don't deduce, I observe."

The casting for this film baffled me. To me the best actor to play Sam Bowden was Robert DeNiro, as he is the only actor of his generation that could possibly do justice to a role created by Gregory Peck. Likewise, I cannot see a better man to play the rough, seedy, twisted Max Cady, than Nick Nolte. Further, I do not understand turning the Bowden family into self-gentrified white trash, unless the producers bought the notion put forward in the novel 'Wild At Heart', namely that's all there is in Cape Fear. Writing 'Danielle Bowden' as a sexually-precocious Lolita-esque character is likewise baffling was this a reference to the troubled production of the original film? Lewis' performance got her an Oscar nomination, but was it really necessary to the film? Were we supposed to sympathize with Cady, whose character in this film was actually a mashup of the original 'Cape Fear' and 'Night Of The Hunter'? The brilliance of the original film is its simplicity: A straight-arrow lawyer loses faith, and commits a crime against his society, his profession, and the very foundations upon which his country is founded. Max Cady is the instrument of his comeuppance.

Crispin Glover (though he would be quite interesting in the part)
                                  Peter Graves
Ben Affleck (see the sicko killer who bores his victims to death!)
                                  John Travolta
                                  Fred MacMurray
Fred Williamson (you know he'd be the hero who'd save the day).
I would, respectfully, disagree a bit with the poster who selected Ernie Borgnine. Borgnine was a lot better actor and could play sinister quite well. He couldn't have pulled off the sexual innuendo that DeNiro had going on with his character, most likely. But as far as being a scary mofo who could terrorize an entire family - Oh heck yeah!

I noticed at least 90% of the examples given on this thread are comic actors.
