Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Usual Suspects

    wiki119 — 10 years ago(July 25, 2015 01:26 AM)

This says that it's better than The Prestige (2006) and The Departed (2006) which is not true imo. Either those movies are underrated or this one overrated. Idk what were the voter thinking while judging this movie. I guess the main difference is, i saw this movie in 2015 and have already watched other thriller/mystery movies while those who gave it a 10 may have watched this movie as the first movie of their lives.
I almost forgot mentioning SAW (2004), the mother of twists.

People judge movies on more than just the twist. I can't say I very much like the movies you mentioned, nor was I particularly impressed by their twists.

You may have stumbled upon the truth in that The Usual Suspects pre-dated the films you mentioned. The fact is that it had an impact on most of the 'twist' films that followed it, one way or another, and so deserves credit for that. And as for 'the mother of twists' (SAW), I hate to say it, but I knew
the body on the floor was going to be significant the moment it first appeared on the screen.
In addition, knowing the twist in SAW doesn't make any difference to watching the film a second time, whereas with TUS, you start picking up on all the things that didn't quite add up the first time.

Watched it twice in theaters in the fall of 1995.
Bought the widescreen format VHS when it became available.
Bought the DVD when I was able to watch movies on DVD.

Voted on this movie, gave it a 9/10 at the first opportunity. Likewise, I gave The Departed an 8/10, but The Prestige got a 6/10. I could see that movie being well made/acted and all that sh!t, but I didn't really like it all that much.
It don't matter who you hear it from. It's the same story.

It is. Simple as that. It is also better than those massively overrated Nolan Bat flicks which have no right in any top ten, but that's another argument.

I was entertained so much more by The Usual Suspects than by the other two named. So many little touches. It's a lot of fun and I rarely miss it if it's on.
I think films made before 1990 don't get the attention here that they should. But it isn't anything I lose sleep over.

I don't take the rating system here all that seriously. I tend to reward films I liked and punish those that I hated. In 50 years no one will care.

Imagine watching this movie in 1995 you didnt have this kind of ending at that time, after that the twist ending was very fashionable, maybe us those who had watched this movie at that time rate this movie very high.

Ermno. As great as the Prestige, Departed, and even Saw actually are, Usual Suspects IS better
The Departed isn't even an original film - If you didn't know, it is a remake of Infernal Affairs

Good lord. Saw's is the most anemic plot twist not written by Shyamalan I know. It does exactly nothing to make you reconsider the events of the movie, and demonstrates better than any of Saw's other failings that the writers didn't know what they were doing.

How old are you? Maybe when you're older you'll see the movie differently.

i am 22 and my age has nothing to do with my liking lol.
If i watched it back in 1995, i would have definitely liked it more. But after a number of good movies have released i think it's kinda unfair for this movie to have such high rating. i'd give it around 8, but 8.6 is kinda high beats many good movies stuck at 8.5. idk i am just making a point.

dude just go check imdb top 250 movies, half of the movies in top 100 are really old and got top in list due to old voters. Take for example Rear Window (1954) making 40th at the list where Memento (2000), Django Unchained (2012), The Prestige (2006), Gladiator (2000), Heat (1995) and many more, which i found more interesting than Rear Window and The Usual Suspects, are underrated imo.
