Wasn't it inspired by the book Neuromancer?

Probably but in that scene, just like with Neo,he basically became bullet proof by controlling his own perception of what was real or not.Plus the Doc Holliday gang almost were like the agents in The Matrix.

not a bad take on this.
i liked when spock "macguyvered" together the anesthetic gas and sits there deeply inhaling like he's some 60s hippie druggie.

The Dune book series have the brains in a vat as well.

Gnosticism. Life as a simulation. The agents are the archons. Architect is the demiurge. Sophia is represented in Trinity and the Oracle. People are harvested here for their loosh energy. Everything is a trick. The only way out is to see the trick. The way out is the pleroma (to the God beyond "God"/the demiurge). They don't like to show you that part. Neo never once left the matrix. The real world was a second matrix.

Damn, kudos for knowing some pretty obscure theological stuff. I'm betting you and I are one of the few people on this forum who even know what archons and the demiurge are.

Could explain why Neo had certain powers in the "real world".

Neo’s neural implants (the headjack on his skull) allowed him to detect the machines’ electronic frequencies in his brain, essentially allowing him to see them even though he was blinded.

There is literal scene in the Matrix (1999) of Neo touching the mirror wall of reality that spills into binary liquid, and hence morphs with this hand.

Also highly influenced by “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, which is set in a post apocalyptic wasteland after an AI supercomputer triggered a nuclear holocaust, and now tortures and experiments with the last remaining humans using its advanced technology and ability to construct virtual realities.
