I almost feel inclined to consider "Happiness" as one of the most (if not
the most
) disturbing films I have ever seen. Does anyone else agree? If not, what is the most unsettling picture you have ever encountered?
(and let's try to exclude the faux-snuff films that indulge in the shock value of unnecessary violence and goreI'm looking at you, Cannibal Holocaust) -

Nothing remotely disturbing about it frsaken-ot? Let me guess you turned it off before the beep pedophile shows up? There are truly disturbing scenes in this revolving around the rape of a child. IF you didn't find this at least a little disturbing something it wrong with you. Saying that I love this movie.

I didn't find it disturbing at all. I thought it was really funny.
Dark comedy at its best!!!!
I've only recently started watching Solondz's movies, starting with
Dark Horse
, which I stumbled upon on Netflix. After that I watched
Life During Wartime
and
Storytelling
. I think the guy is a brilliant writer and director and he has the ability to take horrid situations and make them hilarious.
So far, I think
Happiness
was the funniest. -

I just recently saw A Serbian Film it was far more disturbing. Others I have seen that rank up there are Oldboy,Martyrs, Irreversible, August Underground's Mordum, The War Zone, Twentynine Palms, I haven't seen them(but supposedly Takashi Miike's films are all very disturbing.

I think the Op referred to a different type of disturbing. I agree with you sa a jaw dropping-visuale shocking serbian film is the top one, even thought I didn't think much of it, they were so busy trying to put so much violence concentrate together that forgot to give a story line to top it up the acting wasn't that great ether.
As per sycological disturbing I think martyrs are way better, and the acting if fabulous. This film is disturbing in a way of realization that this things (pedophilia) happens everyday. -

I don't know, this seemed like a dark comedy to me, the ending had me laughing uncontrollably for a whole minute. I find some Lars von Trier films or just old gory slasher flicks more uncomfortable and harder to sit through.

I just saw this film. I chose it because I have never seen a Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance that was bad-ever. And he certainly did not disappoint here, although I too found this to be an extremely disturbing film that was horrifying to watch.
If you like disturbing films, this is a good one to pick even though I almost didn't finish it; it was just too gross in some parts. Another hard-to-watch darkly disturbing film is Dogtooth.
