Excuse me for finding rape and pedophilia unsettling.

Nothing remotely disturbing about it frsaken-ot? Let me guess you turned it off before the beep pedophile shows up? There are truly disturbing scenes in this revolving around the rape of a child. IF you didn't find this at least a little disturbing something it wrong with you. Saying that I love this movie.

Someone finding vile things vile doesn't make them "soft". Also, watching movies doesn't make you tough. Don't say dumb things. But yeah, there are more disturbing movies.

I didn't find it disturbing at all. I thought it was really funny.
          Dark comedy at its best!!!!
I've only recently started watching Solondz's movies, starting with
          Dark Horse
, which I stumbled upon on Netflix. After that I watched
          Life During Wartime
          and
          Storytelling
. I think the guy is a brilliant writer and director and he has the ability to take horrid situations and make them hilarious.
          So far, I think
          Happiness
          was the funniest.

I just recently saw A Serbian Film it was far more disturbing. Others I have seen that rank up there are Oldboy,Martyrs, Irreversible, August Underground's Mordum, The War Zone, Twentynine Palms, I haven't seen them(but supposedly Takashi Miike's films are all very disturbing.

I think the Op referred to a different type of disturbing. I agree with you sa a jaw dropping-visuale shocking serbian film is the top one, even thought I didn't think much of it, they were so busy trying to put so much violence concentrate together that forgot to give a story line to top it up the acting wasn't that great ether.
As per sycological disturbing I think martyrs are way better, and the acting if fabulous. This film is disturbing in a way of realization that this things (pedophilia) happens everyday.

The most disturbing film of all time for me would be The Mist - because of the horrible ending.

Loved The Mist, and it's ending.
Any other ending would merely have been the same tired old Hollywood happy ending crap.

definitely disturbing. I dare you to watch
Sal, or the 120 Days of Sodom
                    though.

I don't know, this seemed like a dark comedy to me, the ending had me laughing uncontrollably for a whole minute. I find some Lars von Trier films or just old gory slasher flicks more uncomfortable and harder to sit through.

I just saw this film. I chose it because I have never seen a Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance that was bad-ever. And he certainly did not disappoint here, although I too found this to be an extremely disturbing film that was horrifying to watch.
If you like disturbing films, this is a good one to pick even though I almost didn't finish it; it was just too gross in some parts. Another hard-to-watch darkly disturbing film is Dogtooth.

I wouldn't call it disturbing, just a very dark comedy. I mean, people like that actually exist in the real world, and that's just how it isit's like an insight into the uglier parts of human society. I will say, I feel like it's not as stone-cold realistic as some people say it is, it's definitely a "movie".

I think this movie is disturbing because it forces us to confront extremely uncomfortable, dark situations head on, and thus unsettles us. It also provides little to no clue as to its tone from the very beginning, creating a deeply unsettling atmosphere. Is this a comedy? A satire? A look at how bleak human existence can be? It's a little bit of everything.
I loved it, I laughed a lot, but I also find it to be a disturbing movie.
