After watching both on HBO, I can say clearly that Ju-On is scarier and better. The Grudget is a medeocre remake and the only reason people say it's better is becuase they don't have to read subtitles. Ju-On is better made and scarier.

I honestly think it comes down to what order you watch these two films in that dictates which you prefer.
I originally saw the amercian version in a cinema with my girlfriend, knew nothing of the film (read no reviews) and really didnt know what to expect except poor acting from michelle-geller. It ended up scaring the sh*t out of me (more with jumps and dreading what was coming next than being outwright creepy) but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I saw Ju-on a good year later, and found it reasonably creepy and in some ways superior to the remake (atmosphere etc).
I saw the remake again on TV recently, and I must say it was CRAP compared to the japanese version! I couldnt believe I had found it spooky the first time around, but hey.
All comes down to timing IMHO -

Honestly,I saw Ju-On the other day on one of the movie channels (Forget which one it was) and it was definitely scarier.It did some actual scares instead of "BOO!" like pretty much all American horror movies love to do.The remake also made the stupid noise the mother made and made it even more annoying,so that's a minor plus for Ju-On.I thought it was really cool in Ju-On that they actually show the father ghost and he actually walks and is sort of scary instead of the annoying mother ghost doing the crawly thingy while the remake doesn't show him at all (And if it did,it wasn't automatically noticeable)

I saw Ju-On: The Curse last summer, and it was officially the scariest movie I ever saw. Having saw the american Grudge, that was scary too. Then I saw Ju-On: The Grudge, and I litterally lauged so hard. Pure comedy! THe JOTG2 was scarier. So What I pick is Ju-On The Curse.

I agree with you on that too, since a lot of people that said they hated the Grudge saw Ju-on first. How was The Grudge not scary????
You've got to be crazy!
Before I got Ju-on I was thinking of not getting it since I thought it'd be a LOT scarier. And the American verison had already scared the complet sht out of me. But it actually wasn't. Yeah, I know. How is that possible!?!?
But then again, I saw The Grudge in theaters and in theaters it's a million times more scarier.
But still, the women in the American verison seems a lot scarier, the one in Ju-on seemed more human like if you know what I'm getting at.
Plus in Ju-on they didn't have in the beginning that girl getting sucked up into that attic or that part where the guy was walking down the stair and you see the jawless girl, or the part where that one women was walkng up the stairs and she looks down and you see the thing climbing up after her, or the part where the main character was on the bus and you see the dead womens face just pop out at you.
Yeah, all the parts that scared the sht out of me they didn't have in ju-on.
Or they had it and it wasn't as scary to me.
I also felt at the part where the women was in the elevator wasn't as scary as in the American verison. I mean, in that one you just see the kid there passing from window to window from window and he doesn't move, but in the American one you see him get closer and closer and closer.
There was things done better Ju-on but I still think the American verison was scarier. I still wonder, how the hell is our verison scarier than the Japenze!??!? That's like, the greatest achveiment ever!

Ju-On is the better film.
Hands down.
Sarah Michelle Geller as an American nurse? American family? Granted, it's an American remake, but if you're going to butcher it so much, place it in America, not Japan. I almost found it insulting to even use Japan in The Grudge.
What was annoying is how they made the woman in The Grudge wear the same clothes. When the guy sees the pictures, and she's in every background, she's wearing white all the time. Didn't she ever change her clothes? Did she stalk him for just one day? They could have used other bright colors to make her stand out.
Her ghost just looked too CGI. Didn't scare me. What scared me was in Ju-On, when she's going down the stairs, how solid she is. The way she moves, stares it's scarier because it comes across as being more authentic. She looks more like a human who is pained and in need, where as the ghost in The Grudge just looks so crappily CGI.
And the plot was spoonfed to the audience in The Grudge. Boring.

The Grudge was just another stupid American remake, that deserves to be forgotten It wasn't scary, it wasn't even good. American filmmakers needs to start using their own brain - a long shot I know - and come up with something themselves. But that will never happen; American filmmaking is falling apart. Ju-on was much much better

Before we get too out of hand lets remmeber both were directed by Takashi Shimizu.
I personally found the Amercian version scarier as I had no idea what to expect, I found Ju-On less spooky as I knew what I was getting myself into.
Ju-On: The Grudge 2 is legitimately scary, especially after a few puffs.
I acknowledge that the Japanese version is far superior (after comparing the two), but hey its all in the timing. -

Well, The Grudge was indeed directed by Takashi Shimizu, but he had some help from Sam Raimi (that's why Ted Raimi's in the film, as well). I actually love Raimi's work most of the time, it's just the remake was meant to be dumbed down and CGI'ed for a Western audience.

Yeah as far as I know it was Sam's idea to remake the film for the USA anyway. I dont think they did too bad of a job "porting" it over for western viewing, I definitely scared the crap out of me initally. Provided it inspires people to seek out the Japanese original, and thus leads them to other great Japanese cinema then I'm all for it.

Ju-On was way freakier. everything was just so quiet. it was unsettling.. besides.. the american version was changed so much it was just another cookie-cutter ghost movie. Ju-On was far more unique and eerie.. such as how it would show the ghosts but not make any audio clue about it it would make you a little nervous.

I HATED the Grudge, Ju-On was way better. I really felt that Ju-On was much scarier. It had a subtle horror that terrified me. It also didn't try to make crappy excuses for a blonde American actress to be in it. Man, The Grudge was stupid.

I agree, The Grudge was a beep mess of a movie.
It wasn't scary in the least, but it's probably because I saw Ju-On first, so everything was predictable.
But, seriously, Ju-On is worth a rental.
It gives you a feeling of serious dread throughout the movie which means it's doing its job as a horror movie. -

Yes sir, the grudge was a mess !!! But have a peek at the director's name : Tak-kun again, seems like he received cash to spoil his own child. In fact, the remake could have been so good without the white, or without us, the yellow. I myself prefer full-blood Eastern or Western creepy movies, the fact that they mix us with others gave me some dead laughing !!! You know, ya, why didn't Tak-kun get the whole American casts, it'd've been scarrier. I hate the mixture, clumsy comedy !

True enough. Sarah Michelle doing an eastern horror film made me lawl.
Ju-On was three million times better than The Grudge, in my opinon. It wasn't that scary, but it did make you feel tense, and it had an interesting plot.
But that's my opinion.
