It's interesting that there's even a debate

It's called the checkmate. It's when a guy screws over the use of a urinal for a person by choosing a urinal where there is no way other than to break the cardinal rule of never peeing next to a person. Here's a diagram to illustrate:
Urinals
| A | | B | | C | | D | | E |
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | | |
+-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+
In this situation, if a person is in Urinal A and the second person has urinal C or E to choose from. That way, if a third shows up, then he still has a urinal option without having to stand next to a person. But if the second person picks the "checkmate" urinal (D) he screwed the third person from picking a urinal without standing next to a person. See below:
Urinals
| A | | B | | C | | D | | E |
| | | | | | | | | |
| () | | | | | | () | | |
| ( ) | | | | | | ( ) | | |
| /\ /\ | | | | | | /\ /\ | | |
+-//( | )\-+ +-----------+ +-----------+ +-//( | )\-+ +-----------+
/ | \ The Checkmate -------> / |
/ / \ \ / / \
As you can see. With the checkmate present, urinals B, C and E are now blocked and therefore it either forces the third person to either break the cardinal rule or use a stall. -

To answer your question, posters here come from various boards. Several posted on The Soapbox, but some posted on other IMDb boards, such as Film General or various TV/movie boards. I think some just lurked on IMDb. Some posters here are from Moviechat and TMDB, but I assume most of them were on IMDb before that, even if they only lurked.

"This board" as in Filmboards? Because it was originally an IMDb archive site (it still is; several boards have archived IMDb posts), and it looks similar to IMDb (especially if you use the "Classic" theme). Many IMDbers ended up on various IMDb spinoff sites, and this is one of them.
