There is no part in the movie where he changed to be non-violent. He changed to take care of his family, to stop using drugs, and to care about others in a deeper way.
There's also no part in the movie where he preaches non-violence to native Africans. It amuses you because it's a joke you made up for yourself, in your own head; it does not exist in the movie.

it was the fact that this man who was violent and had supposedly 'changed' had no qualms using violence to achieve his means after his 'big' change of heart
I don't know why that would bother you, though. Religion, religious views, etc. are very complex; it does no good to wish they were simplistic and wish they would easily fit your personal requirements for avoiding ideological "contradictions". It's important to try to understand things from different perspectives if you want to understand anyone in this world other than yourself.
Does it bother you also learning about the Crusades, say? You'd have to avoid a big chunk of the history of the western world to avoid being bothered in this way.

I agree it was integral to the story, but the way it was done felt more like preaching to the viewer rather than just telling the story.

I also found this to be thinly-veiled religious propaganda with a pro-democracy undertone. I couldn't help be reminded of The Cross and the Switchblade, a sleazy "bible will fix impoverished urban areas" Jesus: Your 1-Stop Solution epic, starring the Great White Dope of the 70's, Pat Boone. A better title for this film- Plan Preacher from Outer Space.

Hmmmm, what exactly is a "pro-democracy undertone"??
What would you prefer it bepro-tyrannical despot ruled? pro-communist??
In your world is 'democracy" a "bad word"??

Pro-democracy as in The American Way. Since democracy is democracy in name only, it is a bad word. Considering there are very few democracies on Earth, and most are failing, while there are many evil empires that are flourishing, you might want to reconsider your naive world view.

Funny, i assumed you would be that stereotypical video game worm who pecks anonymously behind your keyboard while never held accountable for your pathetic delusional rants.
However, now i realize you are actually an over the hill sociopath who never "got his shot" so cynicism and hate dominate all your processes. You see the previous years as wasted and all pursuits as failures so now you pathetically relegate yourself to the couch while you await the "evil empires to take over".
There is still hope for you though, seek the advice of a professional and perhaps you can become a successful contributer to life on earth instead of a useless sucker of O2.

you kind of missed the entire point of what i was calling the previous idiot out on and in doing so made yourself look equally imbecilic.
I wasn't speaking of America, The US, "The American Way" or anything remotley US specific.
The discussions centered around the dumbs*#t's application of the term in the same context with "religious propoganda". Of course you, armed with your 12th grade education, decided to seize the soap box for a rant about your disdain for America.
                            Cliche and pathetic.

Not to point out the obvious, but the movie is called "Machine Gun Preacher", to ask "WTF is with this religious crap??" is like watching Titanic and saying "WTF is with this giant sinking ship??"

The film was a biography, so it was naturally supposed to move around Sam Childers' life. If Sam was Charles Manson reborn the film would look entirely different. With that said, and letting be known that I am totally non-religious, I did not the see the film as a "religious indocrination". I do not know what happened in real Sam's life but in the film they took a balanced approach. I do not want to spoil anything (possible minor SPOILERS ahead) but particularly towards the end the plot was not so much focused on religion as on Sam himself, his inner struggle. And eventually it is certainly not Jesus that "saves" him.
Jesus had all along been a scheme to feel less guilt and also have a "divine justification" for his actions.

I agree, maybe it's because so many young people are going agnostic and atheist now that the cults, I mean "religions" have to make films like these to help get us back lol. I'm laughing but seriously the influence hollywood has on people especially children is disgusting. This past decade has mostly been military recruitment pieces.
