OK, a quick OT question..were you appalled at the attempt at Dutch at the Stroopwaffel truck? So, hagelslag is tough to saytwo g'sbut stroop? I'm actually always happy when I hear or see a mistake that most people will miss, but I thought of you immediately, while chuckling.well, demonically.

Mostly it was a lot of mispronounced Dutch words. And my husband's family only had oliebollen for a NY's day treat. I'm not sure if that is all Dutch people, but my husband would have been surprised to find them available all the time. But Lucifer is right; they taste a lot better than the English translation would have you think

Actually, I was more surprised by the fact that there is such a thing as Stroopwafel trucks in de US. At least I won't be homesick if I ever get the chance to cross the pond.
Hearing those familiar words coming from the Devil's lips was a treat! I must say the pronounciation was really close for non-native speakers. I'm impressed. This I could follow, in POI those Dutch commands to Bear not so much.
Although some small details for nerds like me:
stroopwafel: "o" as in "home", "a" as in "Chicago"
oliebollen: first "o" as in "home", second "o" as in "soccer"
hagelslag: first "a" as in "Chicago", second "a" as in "arm", "g" as in "loch"
Stroopwafels are great with a cup of tea or coffee, but basically always edible.
Oliebollen are usually a New Year's eve treat, but also for special occasions. Best eaten warm with a lot of powdered sugar.
Hagelslag in chocolade or fruit flavour is used on buttered, sliced bread. Usually eaten as breakfast and/or lunch. -

I do love how Oliebollen & Oily Balls sound so similar. Mmmmmm.:)
I wonder if Chris Rafferty's a big fan of Dutch treats? Interesting Food Truck choice. He even showed the restaurant logo on Twitter and asked who'd eat at a place Freddy's Dutch Oven.

That was weird! I got a notice for my own post!
There used to be a "Dutch store" about an hour's drive from here, and he sold all the wonderful things my husband can't find in the US. They owner was even a baker, and at New Year's he would make oliebollen. Amazon pretty much put him out of business, but also he was getting old and his kids didn't want to run the store. Hubby misses his big chocolate initial for Sinterklaas and some pickles and herring, but he goes home often enough to get most things occasionally.

Well, at least now I know I wasn't losing my mind. I was seriously confused about why you were asking me about Dutch pastries.
It's tough when you move to new regions (I know, I've done it a lot), and the things that were your favorites are no longer available. Especially these days when there are so few mom & pop or specialty shops left. In California anyway, they've all been pushed out for national chains so there's very little variety anymore.
I'm glad he gets to go home for the things that are special to him.

Not to mention all the speculaas and pepernoten this time of year! Thinking about all the tasty Dutch food, I wonder if I ever could get used to not having them.

Try craving something from your childhood home when you're pregnant! It's the worst. Your body and mind just keep screaming at you that you HAVE to have it.
My poor hubby drove all over the tiny state of Delaware and into the state of Pennsylvania looking for my craving. My first pregnancy was really strange. For some weird reason, I had all-day-long morning sickness for months. And the only thing I could eat was pineapple(!?) and then after Thanksgiving, mashed potatoes. So I had this extremely limited diet when I got this out-of-nowhere craving for a Dairy Queen burger with this special sauce that I hadn't had since I was a kid living on the west coast. So my husband went to every Dairy Queen he could find and none of them sold anything but ice cream. I thought I was going to die. For about 7 months. The last couple of months I was no longer sick but started craving champagne (again, wtf?). At least that was easily available and I was planning to drink some in the hospital to celebrate the birth. But as soon as I had the baby, the craving was gone. lol. And the really weird thing is, my firstborn hates pineapple! I swear, human pregnancy has to be the weirdest reproductive process that has ever evolved.
So anyway, I REALLY can relate to craving something you remember that's just not available.

I didn't say it made sense. I remember reading somewhere that Hollywood has like 33 different ways in which they can account for a movie's loss or gain. It is why they were able to only pay the author of Forrest Gump something like $50k. They were supposed to pay a % of the net profits, so they put ALL of the costs of the film, advertising, VHS and such against the money the movie earned, and were able to claim it didn't make any money.

Where did THAT come from? They do analysis of any project that comes through the door before deciding to make it. Some movies they know they'll spend 100 million on and know full well they'll make 200 million and for whatever reason they decide that's acceptable for the project. On other projects, they see a much bigger payday. Say, movies with big names attached (A Tom Hanks or in his heyday, a Harrison Ford) or movies that adapt a popular property (the Harry Potter novels as an example). Movies that are part of a franchise with earmarks of being huge are considered "cash cows". And that determines how much of a budget you're willing to throw into it. It's a projected return on investment. Do you think Disney was surprised how much Star Wars TFA made? No, they had it mapped out. Maybe it did less, equaled or exceeded those projections but those projections were there.

You're forgetting the gross is before they do the splits with the theaters that show the films.

That completely depends on their production budget.
If Movie "A" cost $100m to make, Grosses $700m, has to split the gross with theaters 50/50, it's made $300m.
If Movie "B" takes $250m to make, Grosses $700m, has to split the gross with theaters 50/50, it's made $225m.
