This story about Meryl threatening to quit the film if Cazale didn't keep his role in Deer Hunter seems untrue. She was what Hollywood would call "a nobody" at the time, why would they care if she quit? I think she's the worst part of Deer Hunter. They should have let her quit.

nobody TO ME, and especially not that great at ACTING. It's beyond me, the things people say about her. She nearly ruined The Deer Hunter, anyone would have been better, AND she was AWFUL in Sophie's Choice. So whatever, the world loves mediocrity, they get it in her work. They should have let her quit, he was GREAT, what is she? Hollywood's a big joke nowadays, it's HARD to find ONE good actor. And Meryl is terrible at accents, btw. She might sound good to anyone who never heard any accents.

I honestly and sincerely think they ARE off the wall. Even Clark Gable refused to do an accent in Gone with the Wind I'm just absolutely stunned by the fact that many actors say she is their favorite, even in the soap mag when they have the interview at the end. We've gotten to the point where we just say "GUESS who their favorite actor is?" and we all shake our heads. We don't see it. Sorry to all the Meryl fans. But anyway, this is Cazale's forum. Saw Dog Day Afternoon last week on TV - those two guys are such a blast in that movie, Pacino & Cazale. A great team, I wonder what else they could have done. It would have been a treat for us.
Take care, gob! -

moonchildiva-
you are an idiot. Meryl Streep is one of, if not, the best actress of her generation and her accents are flawless. Granted she was just starting out when she made The Deer Hunter, but she was great in that movie. And Sophie's Ch5b4oice is considered one of the greatest performances by an actress of any generation. You sound like a bitter old hag -

Yeah, whatever, as I've said before, take your butt over to the streep forum and kiss HER butt there. This is the Cazale board. Are you afraid to have your own opinion of great acting, but prefer to follow the crowd? Go for it. That chick cannot act her way out of a paper bag.

And what, pray tell, do you know about acting? Have you ever had any formal training whatsoever? Or are you just jealous because she's prettier at fifty-nine than I presume you ever will be with a thousand times the talent? You must be compensating for
something
.
Here are the facts as I know them.- Meryl was engaged to him right up until the day he died. They never broke it off.
- She did threaten to quit. Even at that age she'd already won a Tony award and was Yale Drama School's brightest young star, and the filmmakers knew it.
- She met Don Gummer just weeks after John died. They were married that September. I do believe she has always loved John it seems to be a very painful subject for her to talk about but she needed someone, and along the way, she and Don fell in love, and after thirty years they're still married.

Can I act better than Meryl? Of course not. That, at my school, would be sacrilege.
But yes, I can act. I can act7ec quite well, thank you very much. When the best high school theatre department in the state is nudging you to go to college to study acting, you have to have SOME talent. Honestly, I'm a much better director than I am an actress. But I spent three years studying seriously seriously enough that, had I gone to college for acting, I could have skipped the intro course and possibly the next level up as well.
Does that answer your question?

ETA: I AM SO SORRY. I thought you had replied to me
However, I'm going to leave this up here in case anyone else wants to take potshots at my credibility. -

Now your just writing to see your own words what your saying is utterly ridiculous. If you don't like her for whatever reason fine but don't be ignorant for the sake of argument. You sound very bitter also I think maybe your letting your emotions get the best of you.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride. -

I've heard that's not true. What happened was the financial backers of the film wanted him off but director Michael Cimino refused to fire him. Instead, he accommodated John by fi2000lming the scenes he appeared in first in case he became too ill to work and had to leave. The story about Meryl was that she took her part in the movie to be near him. She was an up-and-coming actress at the time but not exactly a big name.

You obviously don't know how to discuss on the internet - you can have your opinion of "celebs" (I won't even call her an actor) without going ballistic on people. First of all, this isn't the kiss Meryl's butt board. This is John's board. Go to the Meryl board if you want to put her on a throne. You're one of the sheep, I guess. And I'm an Awful Human Being. Ok. If not being a FAN of Streep's with EVERYONE ELSE means that, I ACCEPT. Thanks for your response. Get some manners.
