Seen as no-one has replied in two weeks I will say either Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider or Richard Roundtree.

Good choices. I was also thinking Steve Buscemi.

Johnny Depp. I think his face is close enough to be a perfect match. He's already known for becoming nearly identical to many people including Ed Wood, Joe Pistone, Hunter S. Thompson, and James Barrie. Joe Pistone once said that Depp was so good in Donnie Brasco, that he (Joe) wasn't able to tell the difference between Depp's voice and his own. Depp moved, looked, and talked exactly like him. That's why I think Depp is the greatest actor ever, although Cazale is definately up there.
Who would play Pacino, De Niro, Walken, and Streep? I can't think of anyone for those roles.

Johnny is one of my favorite actors, and people are pitching him for every role in the world but I'm not sure he's right for this one. Buscemi is a fine choice. I was also thinking about Paul Giamatti, although he'd have to lose a bit weight.
We also need a Francis Ford Coppola and a Gene Hackman (for The Conversation).

Johnny Depp would be a good choice, and Michael Imperioli should play Al Pacino in that case. Julianne Moore as Meryl Streep.
However, I think that making a movie about such well-known actors/actresses, it would be best to use fictional characters, whose lives are based upon the lives of John Cazale, Meryl Streep and Al Pacino, and put an 'in memoriam' for John Cazale in the ending credits. However, I was thinking the same thing today: someone should make a movie about the life John Cazale.

Good suggestions so far. I'll add Leland Orser to the list. He's great at playing those sorts of characters.

Definately Buscemi or Depp. Depp's chacter in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas kind of reminds of John in the deer hunter

Adrien Brody as John and Linda Cardellini as Meryl.
What is it, Old Nehamkin? You are not looking well.

I think David Hyde Pierce, the guy who played Niles Crane on Frasier. If you died his hair and everything, maybe gave him a fake nose.
My second choice would be Steve B.

YES! That's who I was looking for, I couldn't put my finger on it. I agree, if he were younger, dyed his hair and lost his accent he would've been perfect for the role. I would also say Adrien Brody just because they have the same sad eyes. For Meryl Streep, Jennifer Ehle who could very well be her younger sister.

Carlyle is a terrific choice. I was thinking Bradley Whitford.

I guess Edward Norton. He looks kinda like him.
I have no idea who would play Meryl or Pacino, though.
Paul Giamatti could make a good Coppola.
