Serious question: What is that Indian smell?

Well, you know smells carry and travel with you. I remember once there was a bunch of us in an elevator, and this guy got in who reeked of garlic.
I don't know if he had just finished eating a meal with garlic or what, but he had the whole elevator fuming! When he got out, people were talking about the smell.

There's a distinct smell in Indians' homes and businesses, and, frankly, sometimes just in their presence.
Is it incense? Oil? Spice of some kind? -

They don't smell like patchouli oil, and they sure as hell don't smell like roses.
It's not oil.
And there are different types of fragrances, most often Patchouli.
Sorry, that I replied. I'll try to avoid that in future.
