Who the hell was kathy bates character suppose to be??? Was she just the neighbor who had a kid die before?? Why was it never made clear just exactly who she was?? at first i thought she might be a neighbor, then i thought she was a mother in law, then it says she's a lawyer. And it mentions her losing someone. It was just stupid and irrelevant to have her in the movie.

Kathy Bates was both a neighbor and an attorney. Did you see the scene where she had to bail the doctor out of jail? He'd gotten arrested for trying to stop that transplate patient from being chopped up. It made sense to me.

i thought jacob smith was sorta hott in this movie. but hey what else am i suppose to say, he looks better bald? Hahaha, for a moment there i thought i was serious. his hair is like his trademark, his facial expressions like in cbtd when he tells mark that there family isnt gonna be the 12 baker kids nemore theyll be like 11. his face hehhe it was so cute, but i laughed my butt off so hard. neways, kathy bates played a tight ass role in dragonfly, but kevin costnar was like vavaboom! Not, i just thoguht his character getting hauntd by his wife was so TIGHT. lol later

Interestingly, the scene where she bails him out was edited in and the shot with Kathy Bates in the PD was made with her in front of a "green-screen," as her character was not initially in this scene.
Fun Fact Time!
Also in reference to when they are chatting in the PD parking lot just after the scene above when Kathy Bates is wearing a hat. The hat was necessary as this scene was shot months later after filming had finished (due to script/story changes) and Kathy's hair had grown to twice the length of her character's and as by then she was involved in another project they could not cut it."You haven't got a clue have you.
But you will do - if you watch for thirty minutes!" -

Kathy's character was a lawyer who was Joe's next-door neighbor & obviously a long-time friend to Joe and his wife. The person she'd lost was her significant-other, as she was clearly in a same-sex relationship of great importance - not something casual. And yes, from a dramatic construction point of view, she's the confidant that allows Joe to verbalize a lot of what's going on by just being there and being trusted.

i thought she lost her daughter? i just watched it for the first time last night but was trying to watch it through 2 screaming, fighting children so i may have misunderstood. i thought it was a pretty good movie so i'll just have to watch it again when i get a chance.

And you know what - I just watched most of it last night and "Hannah" (about who's death Miriam [Bates]refers) is never specified as to personage or relationship, so your take is just as valid as mine. Kathy's character was just so "butch" in her dress and hair and all, I just got that impression, but that's all it is - an impression - but once it was in my head it made sense and I went with it. I don't think it matters - the point is that someone named "Hannah" with whom she was close died and she knows what Joe's going through. But watch it again and see if you get why I thought that.

yes i noticed that she was kinda butchy. i think the reason i thought it was her daughter was because i was watching at my aunt's house with her and she said it was her daughter so i just assumed it was. i do definitely want to watch it again though. really good movie!

Kathy Bates character is listed as Mrs. Belmont. Maybe she was married and had a daughter. Maybe she was married, divorced/widowed and found Hannah
instead of a man. Maybe they gave her a butch look to confuse us. Seemed to work. -

The reason I thought Hanna was Bates' girlfriend, or at least antoher grown-up, was the line with all the daisies, something with Hanna having said that Bates' character could see Hanna was watching over her when Bates saw a daisy with only one petal. To me, that sounded a bit too mature for a kid to say. And she apparently lived with Hanna in the house ("you didn't leave when Hanna died" or something, said by Joe), so that implies something romantic.
