Marty Crane Should Have Died Around Season 5

You make it sound like Martin was a one-dimensional character, just a grumpy old man gimmick. There was so much more to him than that. After a few seasons it was easy to share his joy and pain as much as Frasier or Niles.

Exactly! Martin is one more example (of many) where the show took what most would use as a standard comedy cliche and made it far better and the character with a lot more depth.
It's one of my worst pet peeves and applies in far too many comedies, where a secondary character has a particular career, or a physical handicap, or something, and every single line is related to that.
In lesser talented hands, Martin would respond only as a cop to every single situation or question, no matter how unrelated to police work, and refer to himself as a cop every conversation. THAT version of Martin, I would have had to agree with the OP, only bumping him off by about the second or third season. -

Sitcoms very seldom go for such big developments; such as killing a key character off, when the dynamic of the show is working so well. The contrast of crabby, simple-tastes Dad with haughty, elitist sons provided a lot of chuckles.

Martin was great!
He kept Frasier's big ego in line and also gave him a greeat does of life's reality when he needed it too.
He could still punish his sons & take them to task for behaving like over-grown spoiled children. (Who spoiled themselves oddly enough).
The show at the start was about Frasier mending fences with im and like MArtin said "That takes years, not a few days". Martin could also be hilarious, especially when Fraier has tried to be so "smaet" but only embarasses himself.
Martin : "You thought a monkey was the killer?"
Or how about telling Frasier to as for the Fine Arts dept. of the local police, when Frasier gets cheated in an art deal?
Martin had almost totally mellowed by the final 3 seasons. I was glad to see him land Ronee (Wendy Malick of "Just Shoot Me") and get a new wife.

"Dad. Dad, they're laghing at me.."
Very possibly my favourite Martin moment.
