No, no, no, I'm sane. No inverted axis for me.

Also read in a couple of places now that a prevailing thought seems to be people who don't invert the Y-axis see themselves as playing as the character, where as people who do invert see themselves as controlling the character. I definitely fall into the second camp, but its hardly a large enough sample size to confirm it.
I think its probably just habit though. I played a lot of Goldeneye back in the day and that was inverted by default.

Ah, that explains it. The N64 broke you. Bucket, you too, I presume?

                    Yes and yes.
It's generational. Nothing to do with identifying with the character. Most of the original gen 5/6 FPS games were inverted by default.
It's stupid kids f-cking things up again.

Yeah it was my thought as well. That whole character control aspect seems to be all over the place when you look at articles online, but admittedly it seems to be fairly unsubstantiated.
Based on the responses on here I guess we have quite a few people in and above about 30 on here then.

I think such confidence is ill-advised. Luckily it's pretty easy to check - everyone can just add their age in their responses.
                        I'll be 29 in 19 days - Standard controls.

                          42 and inverted.
I meant generational in both gamer age and developer age and also console generation, but i guess they end up being the same thing more or less.
As an aside - this the other reason for my opinion (posted on the other thread that no doubt inspired this one):
I sometimes play myself as the character (Fallout, Portal, Half Life, Dishonoured, Souls Games) and sometimes the character is being controlled by me (Bioshock, MGS, Batman games, Deus Ex). I always go inverted.
TBH, I think the key variable is how much agency the writing gives to the player to invest himself in the character. This is opposed to the character having clear motives and behaviours written in already. In other words, if I have a choice in a Batman game, I make it as Batman, unlike Fallout where I'd make it as me.
Preferred control scheme seems way down the list of influences.

Yeah very valid point actually regarding the agency of the character in game having no bearing over the preference.
Funny thing is the perspective seems to make more of a difference to me, I can adapt to a 3rd person perspective in a non inverted state a lot quicker than a 1st person game.

Of course. Can't have the crazies holding us back.

I've yet to meet anyone who inverts the X-axis. I mean surely that is a key indicator of some form of madness.

The OPTION to invert the 'Y' axis should always be available - and I'm pretty sure the option is standard. I don't personally invert the 'x' axis, but I believe it should still be an option for those few dyslexic gamers out there. Options are a good thing even if you don't use/need them.
I personally invert the "y" axis for shooters or games with camera controls when I'm using a gamepad. Mouse/keyboard tho i always keep it normal. I Never Invert the 'x' axis tho and Idk why anyone would want/need to - but then again. I don't need to understand it. The OPTION for it doesn't effect me or my gaming in the slightest so it doesn't bother me. Anyone who gets upset about OPTIONS they don't need <- THOSE people are the insane/OCD people. Especially those who feel the need to start threads about it
